WAS THREE FOLD, DECLINE OF

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY OF ALL SITES,

HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND URBAN

RENEWAL AND DESEGREGATION.

GAMBLING AND ILLEGAL LIQUOR

FRONTS WERE THE FIRST MAJOR

DOMINOES TO FALL HINDERED BY NEW

RESTRICTIONS AND SELECTIVE

POLICING THAT HAD BEEN A

CHALLENGE.

CHURCHES THAT ANCHORED THE

COMMUNITY TO THE AVENUE WERE

RELOCATED AND ENTIRE

NEIGHBORHOODS WERE REPLACED TO

MAKE ROOM FOR THE INTERSTATE.

ALONG WITH CONSTRUCTION CAME

URBAN RENEWAL AND DESEGREGATION.

PREVIOUSLY AFRICAN AMERICANS

HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO SIT IN WHITE

RESTAURANTS, PATRONIZE THE

RIVERSIDE AMUSEMENT PARK OR

FREQUENT DOWNTOWN DEPARTMENT

STORES.

AS LEGAL SEGREGATION BEGAN TO

EASE IN THE 1950s AND '60s,

THEY STARTED TO SPEND THEIR

DOLLARS IN THE WIDER ECONOMIC

SPHERE.

THE GARDENS HOUSING DEVELOPMENT,

AN EARLY CROWN JEWEL OF FEDERAL

HOUSING PROJECTS, AND ONCE A

BASTION FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

LOOKING FOR A BETTER RESIDENTIAL

QUALITY OF LIFE WAS EVENTUALLY

CLOSED AND MANY BUILDINGS

 

LEVELED IN THE 1980s.

FREED SLAVES AS A HOME FOR THE

EMERGING AFRICAN AMERICAN

CULTURE OF THE 20th CENTURY.

MUSIC RIPPLED THROUGH THE

STREETS, HERITAGE HAD FORMED IN

THE BUILDINGS AND VENUES THAT

LINED THE BLACK BOULEVARD.

A LANDMARK HOUSING PROJECT HAD

GIVEN RESIDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY

FOR A SAFER AND BETTER LIFE.

FROM THE BAND ROOM TO THE

STANDING ROOM CROWDS OF THE

MADAM WALKER THEATER, JAZZ HAD

BEEN THE LIFEBLOOD OF A SMALL

COMMUNITY AND THE AVENUE THAT

A MAN NAMED SALMON SALMON CAME BACK IN

1821 CAME THROUGH AS A SCOUT FOR

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON TRYING TO

FIND SAFE PASSAGE FOR THE

TROOPS.

WHEN HE RESIGNED HIS COMMISSION

FROM THE ARMY HE WAS PAID WITH A

LAND GRANT, AS MANY OFFICERS

WERE IN THOSE DAYS, AND IN 1823

CAME HERE AND BOUGHT THE FIRST

WE'RE VERY LUCKY BECAUSE THIS

MAN WAS REALLY AN EARLY

CONSERVATIONIST.

IT'S BECAUSE OF HIM THAT WE

STILL HAVE OLD GROWTH TREES AND

IT'S BECAUSE OF HIM THIS IS A

PARK.

WHEN HE DIED, THE TIMBER BUYERS

OF ARIZONA WERE COMING IN FORCE.

THEY WANTED TO BUY TURKEY RUN

AND CUT DOWN ALL THE TREES.

A COMMITTEE HEADED BY RICHARD

LIEBER, A COMMISSION ACTUALLY,

WAS LOOKING INTO ESTABLISHING A

SYSTEM OF STATE PARTS IN

INDIANA.

RICHARD LIEBER CAME HERE TO SEE

TURKEY RUN AND FELL IN LOVE WITH

THE PLACE, HAD TO HAVE IT.

SO HE INITIATED A CAMPAIGN TO

RAISE THE FUNDS TO GET THE

ESTABLISHED NOT JUST TO CONSERVE

LAND BUT TO PROVIDE A PLACE FOR

ALL THE STRUGGLES AND STRESSES

IN THEIR LIVES AND TO JUST SOAK

UP NATURE, RELAX, AND PULL SOME

PEACE INTO THEMSELVES.

DOING, AND THEN I JUST ONE DAY

WE'RE FIVE BEST FRIENDS WHO

TOGETHER.

CREATIVE, PRODUCTIVE

ENVIRONMENT.

WE'RE SERIOUS ABOUT WHAT WE DO,

BUT WE WANT TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN

DOING IT, AND SO WE ERR ON THE

SIDE OF FUN WHEN IT COMES DOWN

TO IT.
