SHE KNEW SHE HAD TO HAVE ONE AND

DOLLARSARS UNTIL SHE SAVED ENOUGH
MONEY, TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION AT
HER FARM IN WILLOW BRANCH,
INDIANA.
THE HOME WAS COMPLETED IN 1879,
BUT AS THE GENERATIONS PASSED
AND THE FARM CHANGED HANDS, THE
HOUSE WAS ABANDONED, LEFT TO
DETERIORATE UNTIL ITS INEVITABLE
DESTRUCTION.

THAT THE HOUSE WAS TO BE BURNT,
THEY CONTACTED THE GREENFIELD
FIRE DEPARTMENT.
SO DARRYL WANTED TO LOOK AT THIS
FIRE DEPARTMENT, BECAUSE HE KNEW
IT WAS AN HISTORICAL HOME.
HE JUST ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE WAY
THE HOUSE LOOKED, WAS DESIGNED
AND ORIGINAL FIXTURES THAT HE
SAW.
HE JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH IT.

HOMETOWN, WHERE HE CALLED AN
EMERGENCY MEETING AMONG FRIENDS.
HE HOPED THAT WHEN THEY SAW THE

TO SHIRLEY, WHERE THE SEVEN
RETIREES WORKED DAY AND NIGHT TO
RESTORE THE OLD FARMHOUSE.
>> IT WAS ALL FRIENDS.
WE KNEW EACH OTHER FOREVER.
AND WE JUST WORKED TOGETHER
GOOD.
WE NEVER ARGUED ABOUT NOTHING
THAT I KNOW OF.
AND WE WOULD JUST HAVE A REALLY
GOOD TIME GETTING TOGETHER.
AND THEN WE WOULD COME TO, WHAT
ARE WE GOING TO DO NEXT?
AND KIND OF LAY OUT SOMETHING TO
DO, BUT IT WAS HARD BECAUSE OF

ALIVE AGAIN.

IT'S TAKEN 20 YEARS BUT THEY
HAVE GOTTEN IT HERE.
IT'S PRETTY MUCH RESTORED EXCEPT
FOR A FEW THINGS THAT NOW NEEDS
TO BE TAKEN CARE OF.
BUT I NEVER THOUGHT THAT -- I
NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD EVER LOOK
LIKE THIS.
NOT REALLY.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC
PLACES AND IT'S NO WONDER.
OF THE 2,000 OCTAGONAL HOMES
BUILT, ONLY FIVE REMAIN IN
INDIANA.
AND JANE ROSS REED'S HOME IS THE
ONLY ONE NOT TO HAVE BEEN
ALTERED BUT COMMUNITY MEMBERS
HAVE SPONSORED THE RESTORATION
OF THE ROOMS BACK TO THEIR
PREVIOUS STATE, GUIDED BY THE
RECOLLECTION OF JANE'S
GRANDCHILDREN, AND THE
DETERMINATION OF THE MEN.
SADLY, ONLY THREE REMAIN TODAY.
BUT THE WORK CONTINUES AND

I HAD TO LEARN ENGINEERING.
SLOWLY, SLOWLY, ALL OF THIS
STUFF CAME TO ME.
I DEVELOPED IT TO MANIFEST THIS
DREAM I HAD.

I POURED THE CONCRETE, GOT THE
LOGS FOR THE POST AND BEAM

BUILDING.
AND JUST WORKED FROM THERE.
WHAT THE HELL IS IT?
I HEARD THAT A LOT FROM PEOPLE.
THEY HAD NO IDEA.
THEY HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING
LIKE THIS.
AND THEY KIND OF WENT ALONG WITH
ME BECAUSE OF ME BUT THEY HAD
NO -- THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS FROM
JUMPING IN TO HELP WITH

TOBACCO, AND HE USED A TEAM OF
HORSES.
HE KNEW SOMETHING ABOUT BARN
RAISING.
SO HE COMES OVER TO HELP ME.
THE NEIGHBORS AROUND THE AREA
HEARD ABOUT IT.
SO THE CHURCH PEOPLE CAME DOWN
ON SUNDAY.
AND MY FRIENDS FROM INDIANAPOLIS
CAME DOWN, AND IT WAS JUST LIKE
THIS BARN RAISING.
IT WAS JUST A WONDERFUL
EXPERIENCING.
WE PUT SMALLER LOGS FROM THE
GROUND UP TO IT, LIKE A RAMP AND
THEN WE -- THEN MAYBE 10, 12 OF
US ROLLED THE LOGS BY HAND UP
THE RAMP.
AND THEN ONCE WE GOT THEM UP
HERE, WE CHOPPED THEM OUT AND
PEGGED THEM TOGETHER WITH BLACK
WALNUT PEGS AND WE PUT THEM DOWN
AND THE TEAM OF HORSES PULLED
AND THE SIDES CAME UP.
AND THEN THEY WENT BACK TO GO
AND WE PEGGED THEM TOGETHER WITH
BLACK WALNUT PEGS.
I KEPT FILLING IN EACH OF THESE
SECTIONS OF SIX-POINTED STAR
UNTIL I GOT THE WALLS AND THE
ROOF AROUND AND I WAS ABLE TO
ENCLOSE IT.
AND THEN IN 1986, BASICALLY THIS
WAS ALL DONE.
THE HOUSE IS APPROXIMATELY 9,000

WAS ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY.

AND SAY, OH, IT'S JUST CHAZZ.
BUT I KNEW IT WAS TOOL.
I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO WORK.
MY FATHER THOUGHT MAYBE I SHOULD
BE COMMITTED.

I TOLD MY FATHER THAT I WANTED
TO BUILD AN INGROUND SOLAR DOME
HOME AND HE SHOOK HIS HEAD, BUT
HE SUPPORTED ME AND TOGETHER ME
AND HIM BUILT IT AND IT TURNED
INTO A GREAT HOUSE OF WHICH THAT
HE WAS PROBABLY MORE PROUD OF IT
THAN I WAS.
>> CHAZZ WAS ABLE TO BRING HIS
IDEA TO LIFE WITH THE HELP OF AN
UNDERGROUND HOME COMPANY CALLED
EARTH SHELTER SYSTEMS.
TOGETHER, THEY CREATED THE
DESIGN AND BLUEPRINT FOR HIS
HOME.
>> IT COMES ON A
TRACTOR-TRAILER.
YOU GET ALL THE MATERIAL, BRING
IT TO YOUR SITE, AND YOU JUST
BOLT IT TOGETHER.
IT'S REALLY SIMPLE TO DO.
AND I HAD HAD FRIENDS COME OVER
AND WOULD HELP ME WIRE TIE REBAR
AND HELP ME FRAME AND HELP ME
PLASTER AND HELP ME LAY DOWN THE
FLOOR.
AND MY FATHER WOULD SIT BACK
HERE ON A BUCKET AND CUT 4-INCH
CONCRETE WIRES ALL DAY LONG.
AND JUST CUT 'EM AND CUT 'EM AND
CUT 'EM AND THEN THAT NIGHT, HE
WOULD BE ON THE OUTSIDE, I WOULD
BE ON THE INSIDE.
I WOULD POKE THEM THROUGH, AND
HE WOULD TWIST THEM OFF.
>> CHAZZ WAS IN A COMPANY THAT
SPECIALIZES IN USING COMPRESSED
AIR TO SHOOT CONCRETE ON TO
STRUCTURED.
THEY WORKED 12 HOURS NONSTOP TO
COMPLETE THE ROOF.
>> THEY WORK.
THEY WORK LIKE BEES.
THEY JUST WORK REALLY, REALLY
HARD, REALLY, REALLY FAST,
BECAUSE IT'S SETTING UP REALLY
QUICKLY.
THERE'S 72 YARDS OF CONCRETE ON
THIS HOUSE.
AND THIS HOUSE IS ABLE TO
WITHSTAND A D-9 BULLDOZER ON TOP
WHICH IS A VERY BIG BULLDOZER.
>> AS CHAZZ NEARED CLOSER TO THE
COMPLETION OF HIS HOME, HIS
STRENGTH AND WILL POWER WAS PUT
TO THE TEST.
>> IT'S A RANGE OF EMOTIONS FROM
BUILDING A HOUSE LIKE THIS, FROM
START TO FINISH IS EXCITEMENT IN
THE BUILDING, ENTHUSIASTIC, AND
I'M NOT TOO PROUD TO SAY THAT
HALFWAY THROUGH, I SAT OUTSIDE
AND CRIED BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW
HOW I WAS GOING TO GET IT DONE.
I'M WORKING A FULL 8 TO 10 HOURS
IN MY JOB AND COME BACK HERE AND
WORKWORK UNTIL MIDNIGHT AND GO BACK
TO THE HOUSE AND TAKE A SHOWER
AND WAKE UP AND DO IT ALL OVER
AGAIN.
AND THAT WAS FOR SIX AND A HALF
MONTHS.
AND NOW I SIT OUT ON THE
COURTYARD AND REMEMBER BACK AND
IT MAKES YOU FEEL REALLY, REALLY
GOOD.
YOU DO GET A REALLY NICE SENSE
OF PRIDE THAT YOU CREATED
SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
>> AND THE PEACEFULNESS OF THE
HOUSE EXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE
COCOONED WALLS.

>> ONCE THE HOUSE WAS BUILT,
THEN I HAD TO CREATE MY OASIS.
I USED RIPRAP, WHICH WAS STONE
AND STUCK IT ON THE HILLSIDE TO
HOLD THE HILLSIDE BACK AND I WAS
TRYING TO CAPTURE A DESERT THEME
HERE AND THEN I BUILT THE
WATERFALL WHICH IS ALL LOCAL
CREEK ROCK, THAT I PICKED UP
EVERY SICKLE ONE SINGLE ONE OF THEM HERE
AND SCRIBED THEM OFF AND LATE.
EVERY STONE ON THIS LANDSCAPING,
I LAID BY HAND PERSONALLY.
>> AS THE DESERT THEME EXTENDS
FROM THE COURTYARD TO THE
SOUTHWEST AMBIENCE OF THE HOME,
COMPLETE WITH METAL WORK AND
VEGAS AND CAUCUS THAT SPROUT IN
A MIDWEST WINTER.
>> HAVING A DESERT SOUTHWEST
THEMED HOUSE IN THE CENTER OF
THE MIDWEST IS RATHER UNIQUE AND
I GUESS THAT WOULD BE MY
PERSONALITY AS WELL.
>> AND IT'S NOT JUST THE DECOR
THAT REFLECTS CHAZZ'S CHARACTER.
THE HOME ALSO BENEFITS THE
ENVIRONMENT, SOMETHING IMPORTANT
TO CHAZZ.
IT'S CONSIDERED A PASSIVE SOLAR
DOME HOME, PRIMARILY HEATED BY
THE SUN STREAMING IN THROUGH THE
SOUTH FACING WINDOWS.
>> MAINTENANCE IS MINIMAL.
ABSOLUTELY MINIMAL.
I GOT TO MOW MY ROOF EVERY WEEK.
BUT THAT'S WORST MAINTENANCE.
WELL, SINCE THE HOUSE WAS BUILT,
LOCAL PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO COME
BY AND SEE IT AND I'M ALWAYS
HAPPY TO SHOW IT.
IT'S WHAT I'M DOING TO HELP GIVE
BACK TO PEOPLE THAT YOU CAN HAVE
A REALLY, REALLY COOL HOUSE AND
REALLY HELP THE EARTH AT THE
SAME TIME.
AND PEOPLE CAN SEE THAT IN THIS
HOUSE.
HOPEFULLY IT INSPIRES PEOPLE TO
BE MORE EFFICIENT OR TAKE SOME
OF THE IDEAS OF THIS HOUSE AND
INCORPORATE THEM INTO THEIR OWN
HOMES.
