WEBVTT 00:01.209 --> 00:02.999 - Welcome to WEDU Quest. 00:02.999 --> 00:04.999 I'm Dr. Shannon McQuaig. 00:04.999 --> 00:07.417 Pasco county schools have created an uplifting new way 00:07.417 --> 00:08.667 of supporting STEM education. 00:09.501 --> 00:11.751 It's the mobile aviation lab. 00:11.751 --> 00:14.292 Fifth graders at Pineview Elementary in Land o'Lakes, 00:14.292 --> 00:16.751 Florida were introduced to flight simulation, 00:16.751 --> 00:18.626 virtual reality, unmanned robotic systems, 00:19.501 --> 00:20.584 and the physics of flight. 00:21.792 --> 00:22.375 (electronic music) 00:25.834 --> 00:27.959 - I came up with the concept of having this 00:27.959 --> 00:30.209 aviation mobile lab so that all kids in Pasco County 00:32.000 --> 00:34.999 could get an opportunity to engage, explore, 00:34.999 --> 00:37.167 and get them exposed to these concepts of aviation 00:38.999 --> 00:40.167 and aerospace. 00:40.167 --> 00:42.501 - In our county we had currently nine elementary schools 00:42.501 --> 00:44.751 that are in the feeder pattern that have aviation 00:44.751 --> 00:46.501 equipment, but I saw such an impact on the 00:48.417 --> 00:50.000 student achievement with that that we thought 00:50.000 --> 00:51.876 maybe it would be great if we could get it to 00:51.876 --> 00:53.709 all of the students in Pasco County. 00:53.709 --> 00:56.083 - [Narrator] Four stations were created where small groups 00:56.083 --> 00:58.459 of six students would receive hands-on experiential 00:59.083 --> 00:59.334 learning. 01:00.709 --> 01:01.999 It starts with flight simulation. 01:03.999 --> 01:07.083 - [Terry] We have fabricated the bus to have six flight 01:07.083 --> 01:09.501 simulators on it, running Lockheed Martin's prepared 01:10.125 --> 01:10.542 3D software. 01:11.999 --> 01:13.999 The students get an opportunity to fly real live 01:15.209 --> 01:17.209 flight simulators where they get a chance to 01:17.209 --> 01:19.417 operate the yoke and really get a feel for flight 01:20.501 --> 01:22.792 and what flight is all about. 01:22.792 --> 01:25.709 - [Narrator] The students also program drones to navigate 01:25.709 --> 01:26.417 a martian landscape. 01:27.459 --> 01:29.751 - We also have unmanned systems. 01:29.751 --> 01:32.042 So we have them operating drones, 01:32.042 --> 01:34.250 but with the drones, we're tying in coding. 01:34.250 --> 01:36.999 So I really believe that coding is important. 01:36.999 --> 01:40.000 And it's a skill that students need to survive, 01:40.000 --> 01:41.792 and our country needs students that are 01:42.999 --> 01:44.375 very involved with computer science. 01:45.918 --> 01:48.417 - [Narrator] Virtual reality is used to teach students 01:48.417 --> 01:48.918 about flight. 01:49.999 --> 01:52.834 - The students are going into a virtual world 01:52.834 --> 01:54.999 and learning about lift and drag and thrust 01:54.999 --> 01:56.918 and really the physics of flight, 01:56.918 --> 01:59.501 and learning how these monstrosity of air vehicles 01:59.501 --> 02:00.999 get into the air. 02:00.999 --> 02:02.459 So they're learning the physics of flight 02:02.459 --> 02:03.999 through virtual reality. 02:03.999 --> 02:04.459 (upbeat music) 02:06.250 --> 02:08.417 And then the fourth activity we have is tied to, 02:10.250 --> 02:11.876 it's 3D printing. 02:11.876 --> 02:15.542 So we take a little plane that we've 3D printed in-house. 02:15.542 --> 02:17.959 They're constructing the plane and then they are 02:17.959 --> 02:20.999 testing different wing shapes to see how that plane 02:20.999 --> 02:23.834 goes through the air, measuring distances. 02:23.834 --> 02:26.417 And then they're doing averaging of which wing? 02:26.417 --> 02:27.709 Was it the elliptical? 02:27.709 --> 02:29.751 Was it swept wing that flew the furthest 02:29.751 --> 02:30.999 after they do trials with that. 02:32.792 --> 02:34.167 - Wanna go over here to primitives. 02:36.083 --> 02:37.250 - [Narrator] The lessons were taught by the fifth graders' 02:37.250 --> 02:38.792 own teachers. 02:38.792 --> 02:41.125 - Ms. Randall was our first classroom that came in 02:41.125 --> 02:43.999 when we came to Pineview Elementary School here. 02:43.999 --> 02:45.751 And she was really excited. 02:45.751 --> 02:46.959 She got the kids excited, 02:46.959 --> 02:48.334 and they were all engaged. 02:48.334 --> 02:50.626 Ms. Randall was really good about encouraging them 02:51.918 --> 02:53.999 and just listening and giving a lot of feedback 02:53.999 --> 02:56.334 and some really great critical thinking strategies 02:56.334 --> 02:58.375 with the questioning that she gave to them. 02:58.375 --> 02:59.918 The way that they were talking and connecting, 02:59.918 --> 03:01.751 they were learning lots of aha moments. 03:01.751 --> 03:03.459 - This is almost like something you would see, 03:03.459 --> 03:04.999 like a parachute, right? 03:04.999 --> 03:05.999 Or one of those gliders. 03:07.459 --> 03:09.667 You have all types of kiddos in every class 03:09.667 --> 03:11.918 and all types of personalities, 03:11.918 --> 03:13.209 and all different ways of learning. 03:13.209 --> 03:14.250 And they all latched on. 03:15.999 --> 03:17.876 Some of them, their favorite was the flight simulator, 03:17.876 --> 03:19.334 some of them was the jumping sumo, 03:19.334 --> 03:21.667 some of them absolutely liked putting those planes 03:21.667 --> 03:24.375 together, and they were fixated on that 3D printer. 03:24.375 --> 03:27.667 Many really, truly enjoyed the virtual reality goggles. 03:27.667 --> 03:29.083 And some of them have had experience with 03:29.083 --> 03:32.125 virtual reality goggles, so to actually have something 03:32.125 --> 03:34.501 that they see as fun but placed in a learning mode 03:35.999 --> 03:37.334 was awesome. 03:37.334 --> 03:40.042 - [Narrator] Computer aided design, or CAD software, 03:40.042 --> 03:42.918 helped the students design planes that would actually fly. 03:44.667 --> 03:47.083 - All of our iPads were preloaded with an app, 03:47.083 --> 03:48.709 so they were able to design a plane. 03:50.292 --> 03:51.542 So they went to glider here. 03:52.626 --> 03:54.626 And then you double tap there. 03:54.626 --> 03:57.167 And then they were able to pick out a stabilizer 03:57.167 --> 03:59.876 and the type of wings that they would have put on there. 04:02.250 --> 04:02.834 (upbeat music) 04:05.375 --> 04:06.959 - [Narrator] The students connected 04:06.959 --> 04:08.626 with this hands-on approach to aviation. 04:09.999 --> 04:12.042 - They all just 100% engaged, and they knew that 04:13.292 --> 04:15.459 there was a goal, and I think that made 04:15.459 --> 04:16.876 all the difference. 04:16.876 --> 04:19.792 - Students like Corina, who is absolutely determined 04:19.792 --> 04:21.792 to find a solution, and so proud of herself. 04:22.999 --> 04:23.959 Comments that she made along the way were 04:23.959 --> 04:24.250 "oh, I got it. 04:25.501 --> 04:26.751 "Oh I'm so smart. 04:26.751 --> 04:27.959 "I know what I did wrong now." 04:27.959 --> 04:29.167 And then modifying and fixing it. 04:31.999 --> 04:34.000 - You got to connect the drone to your iPad 04:34.000 --> 04:36.125 and kind of like code your drone to go through 04:40.459 --> 04:41.000 a obstacle course. 04:42.292 --> 04:44.167 The first thing you have to do is be able 04:44.167 --> 04:46.542 to go around a volcano and jump through this hoop. 04:50.626 --> 04:52.918 You kind of have to make sure the angles are right 04:52.918 --> 04:54.209 because if you get the angle wrong, 04:54.209 --> 04:56.667 you can have it be turning in a different direction 04:58.501 --> 04:59.542 than you wanted to turn. 05:01.501 --> 05:02.999 (upbeat music) 05:02.999 --> 05:05.417 - I think my favorite station was the 3D printer planes 05:08.959 --> 05:10.834 'cause you printed your plane and you test 05:14.125 --> 05:15.834 the different wingspans and aerodynamics. 05:15.834 --> 05:17.459 You would use a rubber band and a binder 05:19.876 --> 05:21.999 and you would pull the plane back and slingshot it 05:24.000 --> 05:26.292 and see how far it went based on a tape measurer. 05:28.125 --> 05:31.000 - [Narrator] These aviators of the future came away 05:31.000 --> 05:33.209 wanting to share what they'd learned with others. 05:34.584 --> 05:37.042 - I'd tell them you gotta do it soon. 05:37.042 --> 05:38.959 It's probably my most fun day at school. 05:40.999 --> 05:43.292 - It's very fun learning about all the different 05:44.999 --> 05:46.792 kind of academics and stuff while doing 05:49.626 --> 05:50.334 hands-on activities. 05:51.999 --> 05:54.501 - [Narrator] The students of Ms. Randall's class have earned 05:54.501 --> 05:56.125 their wings. 05:56.125 --> 05:59.959 They've proven their abilities in the STEM aviation lab. 05:59.959 --> 06:01.999 - I'm going to present each of you with your wings. 06:01.999 --> 06:02.459 So thank you. 06:02.999 --> 06:04.417 Congratulations. 06:04.417 --> 06:06.999 - I know that this week I had four kids take out books 06:06.999 --> 06:08.999 on how to fly and planes and pilots after this. 06:10.334 --> 06:13.042 So it just lit a fire in some of them. 06:13.042 --> 06:16.083 I think it's a great seed to plant at this age. 06:16.083 --> 06:17.959 - Just the ability for them to really stick 06:17.959 --> 06:19.959 with something and feel confident and fixing 06:21.375 --> 06:23.459 those things and modifying things until they get it 06:23.459 --> 06:25.083 exactly right and then seeing the pride 06:25.083 --> 06:27.375 that they have when they accomplish that goal 06:27.375 --> 06:27.876 is just huge. 06:29.167 --> 06:30.999 - You know, you're exposing them and opening up 06:30.999 --> 06:33.375 their minds and letting them know the possibilities 06:34.375 --> 06:35.709 that are out there. 06:35.709 --> 06:37.999 And we've kind of lit a fire under these kids, 06:37.999 --> 06:39.334 and that's what it's about. 06:39.334 --> 06:41.334 Just getting them thinking about what their future 06:41.334 --> 06:41.667 could hold. 06:42.417 --> 06:42.999 (upbeat music) 06:47.751 --> 06:49.501 - Quest for more flight information, 06:49.501 --> 06:56.417 visit pasco.k12.fl.us/cte/aviation.
