I don't know if any of you are 03:07.787 --> 03:11.991 align:left in education, but you might find that same thing happens to you. 03:11.991 --> 03:18.198 align:left So I taught here at Shabazz High School in Madison, which is the 03:18.198 --> 03:21.034 align:left alternative high school, so-called because the kids went, 03:21.034 --> 03:26.239 align:left like, every other time. Actually, my first radio show I 03:26.239 --> 03:30.610 align:left had a show at a greasy spoon called Dolly's Fine Foods on 03:30.610 --> 03:33.246 align:left Williamson Street. It was right across from the 03:33.246 --> 03:35.982 align:left Crystal Corner bar, which you may already know. 03:35.982 --> 03:39.819 align:left If you don't, you probably will. And I'd do a show there from 03:39.819 --> 03:43.123 align:left 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning each week day, and then I'd go and 03:43.123 --> 03:47.060 align:left teach at Shabazz, and that worked out pretty good 03:47.060 --> 03:50.096 align:left for a while. But after while I left that, and 03:50.096 --> 03:56.002 align:left I got a job, actually, on Wisconsin Public Radio which it 03:56.002 --> 04:00.740 align:left turns out the guy who runs Wisconsin Public Radio, ran at 04:00.740 --> 04:04.811 align:left the time, heard my show from the greasy spoon and said this could 04:04.811 --> 04:07.514 align:left work on public radio, and I pretty much proved that it 04:07.514 --> 04:11.985 align:left couldn't. But I did several shows there. 04:11.985 --> 04:14.754 align:left Then I got the call to go down to the big time in Chicago at 04:14.754 --> 04:18.191 align:left WGN, which I found out actually stands for Who Goes Next in 04:18.191 --> 04:23.363 align:left terms of personnel. And then I graduated and I 08:03.383 --> 08:09.055 align:left figured I didn't see any ads for English majors wanted. 08:09.055 --> 08:12.092 align:left So it was a question of what am I going to do for a living. 08:12.092 --> 08:15.895 align:left You may run into this shortly. I was shooting my mouth off and 13:56.736 --> 14:01.941 align:left talking and play weird, Louie Louie and songs like that, and a 14:01.941 --> 14:05.712 align:left guy afterward told me, it was Bob Berry, who was a very big DJ 14:05.712 --> 14:09.182 align:left in Milwaukee at the time, rock DJ, the fifth Beatle, actually 14:09.182 --> 14:12.052 align:left the five millionth and fifth Beatle but that's what he called 14:12.052 --> 14:15.755 align:left himself, he said just play the records, give the weather and 14:15.755 --> 14:21.261 align:left get out. He told me not to really 14:21.261 --> 14:24.464 align:left consider that as a career. But there were radio 14:24.464 --> 14:27.167 align:left personalities, and there's some leeway in terms of actually 14:27.167 --> 14:29.803 align:left expressing something you feel about or something you think 14:29.803 --> 14:33.840 align:left about and playing music that you think should be played that 14:33.840 --> 14:36.509 align:left perhaps isn't being played and that sort of thing. 14:36.509 --> 14:39.079 align:left But they don't encourage it. In fact, it almost doesn't exist 14:39.079 --> 14:41.481 align:left anywhere. There's Rush Limbaugh now and 14:41.481 --> 14:46.186 align:left guys like that and Howard Stern.
