you develop relationships 07:33.000 --> 07:34.000 with guys that have been there 07:34.000 --> 07:35.000 and done that. 07:35.000 --> 07:37.000 And that's the great thing about 07:37.000 --> 07:39.000 it, at least for me in the golf 07:39.000 --> 07:41.000 world, is that the guys that 07:41.000 --> 07:42.000 have come before -- You get 07:42.000 --> 07:43.000 those relationships. 07:43.000 --> 07:45.000 And I had a couple of great ones 07:45.000 --> 07:46.000 that really helped me. 07:46.000 --> 07:48.000 Olin Dutra was the 1932 US Open 07:48.000 --> 07:49.000 champion -- '34 PGA champion. 07:49.000 --> 07:51.000 Gave golf lessons at this club 07:51.000 --> 07:53.000 in this town that I lived at in 07:53.000 --> 07:54.000 St. Louis. 07:54.000 --> 07:55.000 He took me under his wing and 07:55.000 --> 07:56.000 talked about putting. 07:56.000 --> 07:58.000 And we'd go out and play nine 07:58.000 --> 07:59.000 holes. 07:59.000 --> 08:01.000 And he was 70-something years 08:01.000 --> 08:02.000 old back then. 08:02.000 --> 08:03.000 And we would go out. 08:03.000 --> 08:04.000 And then I had a relationship 08:04.000 --> 08:06.000 with Byron Nelson that was just 08:06.000 --> 08:07.000 fabulous. 08:07.000 --> 08:09.000 You get those kind of things for 08:09.000 --> 08:10.000 me through golf. 08:10.000 --> 08:11.000 Those kind of really help to 08:11.000 --> 08:12.000 propel you. 08:12.000 --> 08:14.000 >> Gaston: You still have the 08:14.000 --> 08:15.000 collage of Nicklaus? 08:15.000 --> 08:16.000 >> Roberts: No, I don't. 08:16.000 --> 08:18.000 >> Gaston: It may be worth 08:18.000 --> 08:19.000 something today. 08:19.000 --> 08:20.000 >> Roberts: I think it's 08:20.000 --> 08:21.000 probably faded by now. 08:21.000 --> 08:23.000 >> Gaston: What would people be 08:23.000 --> 08:25.000 surprised to know about you -- 08:25.000 --> 08:26.000 Something they don't know that 08:26.000 --> 08:28.000 they would be surprised to know 08:28.000 --> 08:29.000 about you. 08:29.000 --> 08:31.000 It could be away from the golf 08:31.000 --> 08:32.000 course, something you like to 08:32.000 --> 08:33.000 do. 08:33.000 --> 08:34.000 Do you like punk rock? 08:34.000 --> 08:36.000 I mean, what is it, Loren, that 08:36.000 --> 08:38.000 people would be like ,"Wow." 08:38.000 --> 08:39.000 >> Roberts: Well, you know, I'm 08:39.000 --> 08:40.000 a family guy. 08:40.000 --> 08:42.000 I love being around my family. 08:42.000 --> 08:44.000 And really, I spend so much time 08:44.000 --> 08:45.000 on the road, basically. 08:45.000 --> 08:47.000 I hate to say it, I probably 08:47.000 --> 08:48.000 spent more time with my caddy 08:48.000 --> 08:50.000 over the last 30 years than 08:50.000 --> 08:51.000 maybe I spent with my wife. 08:51.000 --> 08:53.000 But you know, I mean, I just 08:53.000 --> 08:54.000 love being at home with my 08:54.000 --> 08:56.000 family and spending time with 08:56.000 --> 08:57.000 them. 08:57.000 --> 08:58.000 And I like working around the 08:58.000 --> 08:59.000 house. 08:59.000 --> 09:01.000 And my wife and I kind of like 09:01.000 --> 09:02.000 to drive around. 09:02.000 --> 09:04.000 We're kind of into architecture 09:04.000 --> 09:05.000 which we kind of like to look 09:05.000 --> 09:07.000 around and look at different 09:07.000 --> 09:08.000 type of architecture, and 09:08.000 --> 09:09.000 houses, and buildings, and 09:09.000 --> 09:10.000 things like that. 09:10.000 --> 09:12.000 We're kind of like pickers. 09:12.000 --> 09:14.000 We like to go through and look 09:14.000 --> 09:15.000 at old antique shops and things 09:15.000 --> 09:16.000 like that. 09:16.000 --> 09:18.000 That's kind of what I like to do 09:18.000 --> 09:20.000 when I'm not at the golf course. 09:20.000 --> 09:22.000 >> Gaston: Most people know you 09:22.000 --> 09:23.000 played on the '95 Ryder Cup team 09:23.000 --> 09:24.000 that lose. 09:24.000 --> 09:26.000 You've also played on two 09:26.000 --> 09:27.000 winning president's cup teams. 09:27.000 --> 09:29.000 I know you were at Medinah on 09:29.000 --> 09:31.000 Sunday, the final round for this 09:31.000 --> 09:32.000 year's Ryder Cup. 09:32.000 --> 09:33.000 You risked losing four point 09:33.000 --> 09:34.000 lead. 09:34.000 --> 09:35.000 Your thoughts? 09:35.000 --> 09:37.000 Would there be anything you 09:37.000 --> 09:38.000 would have done differently if 09:38.000 --> 09:39.000 you were the captain? 09:39.000 --> 09:41.000 Talk about this -- I don't know 09:41.000 --> 09:43.000 if I want to call it a collapse 09:43.000 --> 09:45.000 but a loss by the United States. 09:45.000 --> 09:46.000 >> Roberts: It was a pretty big 09:46.000 --> 09:47.000 loss. 09:47.000 --> 09:49.000 And first of all, you mentioned 09:49.000 --> 09:51.000 the Presidents Cup versus the 09:51.000 --> 09:52.000 Ryder Cup. 09:52.000 --> 09:53.000 There's big difference between 09:53.000 --> 09:54.000 both. 09:54.000 --> 09:56.000 The Ryder Cup, obviously, is the 09:56.000 --> 09:58.000 preeminent event because it's 09:58.000 --> 09:59.000 been around for so long. 09:59.000 --> 10:01.000 And I don't know what it is. 10:01.000 --> 10:02.000 The US dominated that for 50 10:02.000 --> 10:04.000 plus years and no were just 10:04.000 --> 10:05.000 really struggling. 10:05.000 --> 10:06.000 It was great to get the win up 10:06.000 --> 10:08.000 the road to Louisville four 10:08.000 --> 10:09.000 years ago. 10:09.000 --> 10:10.000 It's been a tough road. 10:10.000 --> 10:11.000 It's hard to second guess, 10:11.000 --> 10:12.000 obviously, Davis. 10:12.000 --> 10:13.000 We were right there -- 10:13.000 --> 10:14.000 Basically, had it. 10:14.000 --> 10:16.000 Really what it boils down to is 10:16.000 --> 10:18.000 emotion and digging deep and 10:18.000 --> 10:19.000 wanting it. 10:19.000 --> 10:20.000 You know, the fellowship is 10:20.000 --> 10:21.000 great. 10:21.000 --> 10:23.000 I mean, it's great to be there 10:23.000 --> 10:24.000 and spend time with the players 10:24.000 --> 10:26.000 because, basically, that is what 10:26.000 --> 10:27.000 would be our Olympics. 10:27.000 --> 10:29.000 I know golf is going to be in 10:29.000 --> 10:31.000 the Olympics but this has been 10:31.000 --> 10:32.000 our Olympics because this is the 10:32.000 --> 10:34.000 only time we play a team sport. 10:34.000 --> 10:36.000 We play individual games. 10:36.000 --> 10:37.000 So it's a team sport. 10:37.000 --> 10:38.000 And you know, its just a matter 10:38.000 --> 10:40.000 of wanting to dig down deep and 10:40.000 --> 10:41.000 want to get it. 10:41.000 --> 10:43.000 >> Gaston: So do the Europeans 10:43.000 --> 10:44.000 -- the last two times, do they 10:44.000 --> 10:45.000 want it more? 10:45.000 --> 10:47.000 >> Roberts: Well, it just seems 10:47.000 --> 10:49.000 to me like they just have more 10:49.000 --> 10:50.000 emotion when they come out -- 10:50.000 --> 10:51.000 more emotion. 10:51.000 --> 10:52.000 You know, its tough. 10:52.000 --> 10:54.000 When you come out of the second 10:54.000 --> 10:56.000 half of the huge lead in any 10:56.000 --> 10:57.000 sport, you know, you've got to 10:57.000 --> 10:59.000 be able to finish it off. 10:59.000 --> 11:00.000 And I know they're going to 11:00.000 --> 11:02.000 seriously look back at , you 11:02.000 --> 11:03.000 know, what we do. 11:03.000 --> 11:04.000 And I was on a losing team in 11:04.000 --> 11:06.000 '95 and we had, I think, one or 11:06.000 --> 11:07.000 two point lead going in to 11:07.000 --> 11:08.000 Sunday. 11:08.000 --> 11:10.000 And we ended up losing. 11:10.000 --> 11:11.000 It's the emotion of the thing if 11:11.000 --> 11:12.000 you do it. 11:12.000 --> 11:14.000 And I would question a couple of 11:14.000 --> 11:16.000 things about maybe course set up 11:16.000 --> 11:17.000 or something like that. 11:17.000 --> 11:19.000 >> Gaston: But not player 11:19.000 --> 11:20.000 selection? 11:20.000 --> 11:21.000 >> Roberts: No, not player 11:21.000 --> 11:22.000 selection. 11:22.000 --> 11:23.000 >> Gaston: And you were an 11:23.000 --> 11:25.000 assistant coach in one of the 11:25.000 --> 11:26.000 Ryder Cups. 11:26.000 --> 11:27.000 What year was that? 11:27.000 --> 11:28.000 >> Roberts: That was 2006. 11:28.000 --> 11:30.000 >> Gaston: So if you are a 11:30.000 --> 11:32.000 captain, assistant captain -- If 11:32.000 --> 11:33.000 you are the captain -- 11:33.000 --> 11:34.000 If you lose, you're second 11:34.000 --> 11:35.000 guessed no matter what. 11:35.000 --> 11:37.000 You should have picked this guy. 11:37.000 --> 11:39.000 You should have not put that guy 11:39.000 --> 11:40.000 on the team. 11:40.000 --> 11:42.000 You should have not paired those 11:42.000 --> 11:43.000 two. 11:43.000 --> 11:44.000 >> Roberts: it's a tough 11:44.000 --> 11:45.000 situation. 11:45.000 --> 11:47.000 It's a lose-lose situation no 11:47.000 --> 11:48.000 matter what you do. 11:48.000 --> 11:49.000 You know, the captain gets 11:49.000 --> 11:50.000 blamed for the loss. 11:50.000 --> 11:52.000 But, basically, once you send 11:52.000 --> 11:53.000 the players out there, they have 11:53.000 --> 11:54.000 to play. 11:54.000 --> 11:56.000 I mean, you have to make the 11:56.000 --> 11:57.000 plays. 11:57.000 --> 11:58.000 You have to hit the shots. 11:58.000 --> 12:00.000 You have to hold the putts at 12:00.000 --> 12:01.000 the right time. 12:01.000 --> 12:03.000 It's up to the players to do it. 12:03.000 --> 12:05.000 Now how you space them and who 12:05.000 --> 12:06.000 goes up against who is the 12:06.000 --> 12:07.000 tricky thing. 12:07.000 --> 12:08.000 >> Gaston: Alright, I know 12:08.000 --> 12:10.000 you're very modest in what you 12:10.000 --> 12:12.000 do for the Memphis community, 12:12.000 --> 12:13.000 for the gold community, for the 12:13.000 --> 12:15.000 charitable events that you are a 12:15.000 --> 12:16.000 part of. 12:16.000 --> 12:18.000 Obviously, Le Bonheur is very, 12:18.000 --> 12:19.000 very close to your heart -- Le 12:19.000 --> 12:21.000 Bonheur Children's Hospital, 12:21.000 --> 12:22.000 where my wife works. 12:22.000 --> 12:24.000 Also, the First Tee of Memphis. 12:24.000 --> 12:25.000 The First Tee of Memphis has 12:25.000 --> 12:27.000 really taken off, especially 12:27.000 --> 12:28.000 over the last five to ten years. 12:28.000 --> 12:30.000 Nyrone Hawkins has done a 12:30.000 --> 12:31.000 tremendous job with that. 12:31.000 --> 12:33.000 Great young men and women -- 12:33.000 --> 12:35.000 boys and girls I should say that 12:35.000 --> 12:36.000 are learning the game of golf. 12:36.000 --> 12:38.000 And you're a big part of that. 12:38.000 --> 12:39.000 Why is it so passionate for you 12:39.000 --> 12:41.000 -- The First Tee of Memphis. 12:41.000 --> 12:42.000 >> Roberts: I got involved 12:42.000 --> 12:44.000 originally back in 1994. 12:44.000 --> 12:45.000 And I have to throw it out for 12:45.000 --> 12:47.000 Cal and Melba Vincent and 12:47.000 --> 12:49.000 Charles Hudson because they were 12:49.000 --> 12:50.000 the ones who really started this 12:50.000 --> 12:52.000 program back early '90s. 12:52.000 --> 12:53.000 And it was down at Pine Hill. 12:53.000 --> 12:55.000 And I had actually -- I was 12:55.000 --> 12:56.000 looking for some sort of a 12:56.000 --> 12:57.000 junior golf program. 12:57.000 --> 12:59.000 You were talking about the 12:59.000 --> 13:00.000 Presidents Cup. 13:00.000 --> 13:01.000 That year was the first year I 13:01.000 --> 13:03.000 played in the Presidents Cup and 13:03.000 --> 13:05.000 they were giving players money 13:05.000 --> 13:06.000 to donate to their favorite 13:06.000 --> 13:07.000 charities. 13:07.000 --> 13:09.000 So I was looking for a youth 13:09.000 --> 13:10.000 golf program to make this 13:10.000 --> 13:11.000 donation to. 13:11.000 --> 13:12.000 I asked all the local 13:12.000 --> 13:14.000 professionals around town, you 13:14.000 --> 13:16.000 know, "What do you think is the 13:16.000 --> 13:17.000 best junior golf program around 13:17.000 --> 13:18.000 town?" 13:18.000 --> 13:20.000 And without a single one 13:20.000 --> 13:21.000 disagreeing they always said The 13:21.000 --> 13:23.000 First Tee of Memphis. 13:23.000 --> 13:24.000 At that time it was Mid-South 13:24.000 --> 13:25.000 Junior Golf Association. 13:25.000 --> 13:26.000 The kids are great. 13:26.000 --> 13:28.000 They come out and they play. 13:28.000 --> 13:30.000 They are the mot well-mannered 13:30.000 --> 13:31.000 and nicest kids that we have. 13:31.000 --> 13:33.000 And I said I want to find out 13:33.000 --> 13:34.000 about them. 13:34.000 --> 13:35.000 So I got in touch with them. 13:35.000 --> 13:37.000 It just started from there. 13:37.000 --> 13:39.000 It's obviously become the First 13:39.000 --> 13:40.000 Tee of Memphis now and grown. 13:40.000 --> 13:42.000 It's just a great program. 13:42.000 --> 13:43.000 It really is because it's just 13:43.000 --> 13:45.000 so diverse and kids from all 13:45.000 --> 13:46.000 over different parts of town. 13:46.000 --> 13:48.000 And it's just a great program. 13:48.000 --> 13:50.000 You know, there are scholarship 13:50.000 --> 13:51.000 possibilities through it. 13:51.000 --> 13:53.000 I'm just thrilled to be a part 13:53.000 --> 13:54.000 of it. 13:54.000 --> 13:55.000 >> Gaston: And they're very 13:55.000 --> 13:57.000 receptive of what you have to 13:57.000 --> 13:58.000 tell them and to teach them. 13:58.000 --> 14:00.000 >> Roberts: Oh, yeah -- without 14:00.000 --> 14:01.000 a question. 14:01.000 --> 14:03.000 I mean, obviously, golf is not 14:03.000 --> 14:04.000 the whole idea of First Tee. 14:04.000 --> 14:06.000 That's just one of the things. 14:06.000 --> 14:08.000 That's one of the thing to get 14:08.000 --> 14:09.000 them there, to have something in 14:09.000 --> 14:11.000 common, a game to play. 14:11.000 --> 14:12.000 21:39.000 --> 21:41.000 basketball when you can depend 21:41.000 --> 21:44.000 on teammates, it's all about 21:44.000 --> 21:45.000 So golf can be a team sport. 21:45.000 --> 21:46.000 But it is individual which I 21:46.000 --> 21:47.000 enjoy. 21:47.000 --> 21:49.000 >> Gaston: Alright, Loren 21:49.000 --> 21:50.000 Roberts -- What type of an 21:50.000 --> 21:51.000 influence has he had on skills, what to do on 21:57.000 --> 21:59.000 and off the course honestly. 21:59.000 --> 22:00.000 >> Gaston: Yeah, all you guys 22:00.000 --> 22:02.000 that are involved in First Tee 22:02.000 --> 22:03.000 of Memphis -- It's not just 22:03.000 --> 22:04.000 You're learning, as you said, 22:04.000 --> 22:06.000 life skills, life lessons -- 22:06.000 --> 22:07.000 learning to be better young men 22:07.000 --> 22:08.000 and women. 22:08.000 --> 22:10.000 Academically, it helps you. 22:10.000 --> 22:11.000 It's more than just golf, right? 22:11.000 --> 22:12.000 >> Luckett: Yes sir. 22:12.000 22:19.000 And it helps you incorporate 22:19.000 --> 22:21.000 those on and off the course. 22:21.000 --> 22:22.000 >> Gaston: You're a varsity 22:22.000 --> 22:24.000 golfer for White Station High 22:24.000 --> 22:25.000 Spartans? 22:25.000 --> 22:26.000 >> Luckett: Our seasons over. 22:26.000 --> 22:27.000 I didn't qualify for state this 22:27.000 --> 22:29.000 year but I am a two time state 22:29.000 --> 22:30.000 qualifier my freshman and 22:30.000 --> 22:32.000 sophomore year and a two time 22:32.000 --> 22:33.000 all metro selection. 22:33.000 --> 22:34.000 >> Gaston: Well, congratulations 22:34.000 --> 22:36.000 And you've got a senior year 22:36.000 --> 22:37.000 still to go. 22:37.000 --> 22:38.000 >> Luckett: Yes sir. 22:38.000 --> 22:39.000 >> Gaston: Alright, have you 22:39.000 --> 22:41.000 started to think about college, 22:41.000 --> 22:42.000 where you what to attend, what 22:42.000 --> 22:44.000 you want to study and will you 22:44.000 --> 22:45.000 play golf? 22:45.000 --> 22:46.000 >> Luckett: I would love to play 22:46.000 --> 22:48.000 college golf but as of where, 22:48.000 --> 22:49.000 I'm undecided right now -- still 22:49.000 --> 22:51.000 looking for the right place or 22:51.000 --> 22:52.000 what I have the most interest in 22:52.000 --> 22:54.000 >> Gaston: Alright, you just 22:54.000 --> 22:55.000 came off that challenge cup 22:55.000 --> 22:56.000 victory over Nashville. 22:56.000 --> 22:57.000 You kicked some butt. 22:57.000 --> 22:59.000 You went three and oh in your 22:59.000 --> 23:00.000 matches. 23:00.000 --> 23:01.000 How was that? 23:01.000 --> 23:02.000 It was like almost a mini Ryder 23:02.000 --> 23:03.000 Cup, if you will. 23:03.000 --> 23:05.000 >> Luckett: it is and it was 23:05.000 --> 23:06.000 This was our fourth year. 23:06.000 --> 23:07.000 This is the first year we beat 23:07.000 --> 23:09.000 Nashville and I'm also 23:09.000 --> 23:10.000 undefeated in my singles 23:10.000 --> 23:11.000 matches. 23:11.000 --> 23:12.000 I just want to put that out 23:12.000 --> 23:13.000 there. 23:13.000 --> 23:15.000 And yeah, this is the first year 23:15.000 --> 23:16.000 we wont and it was great. 23:16.000 --> 23:17.000 >> Gaston: Malik, who do you 23:17.000 --> 23:19.000 follow, as far as professional 23:19.000 --> 23:20.000 Who do you like to watch? 23:20.000 --> 23:21.000 >> Luckett: Of course Tiger 23:21.000 --> 23:23.000 I like Pafraig Herrington, as 23:23.000 --> 23:24.000 well. 23:24.000 --> 23:25.000 Anyone who's hot. 23:25.000 --> 23:26.000 >> Gaston: How about Rory 23:26.000 you feel you are very 23:32.000 --> 23:33.000 strong at and where do you 23:33.000 --> 23:35.000 really have to work at to be a 23:35.000 --> 23:36.000 >> Luckett: I feel I have a 23:36.000 --> 23:37.000 really strong short game. 23:37.000 --> 23:39.000 Around the greens, I can get up 23:39.000 --> 23:40.000 and down from virtually 23:40.000 --> 23:41.000 anywhere. 23:41.000 --> 23:43.000 And I feel I could improve my 23:43.000 --> 23:44.000 ball striking -- just getting on 23:44.000 --> 23:45.000 greens and regulations and 23:45.000 --> 23:47.000 splitting the fairways like Mr. 23:47.000 --> 23:48.000 >> Gaston: You were talking 23:48.000 --> 23:50.000 about being eight years old 23:50.000 --> 23:51.000 playing basketball. 23:51.000 --> 23:52.000 I'm sure all your friends were 23:52.000 --> 23:54.000 playing basketball or football 23:54.000 --> 23:55.000 and not golf. 23:55.000 --> 23:56.000 And then you got in to it. 23:56.000 --> 23:58.000 Do you see now more young men -- 23:58.000 --> 24:00.000 young boys, girls your age 24:00.000 --> 24:01.000 >> Luckett: Yes sir. 24:01.000 --> 24:02.000 I see a lot of them become 24:02.000 --> 24:03.000 extremely interested in it. 24:03.000 --> 24:05.000 And if this keeps going, then 24:05.000 --> 24:06.000 golf will be more than just a 24:06.000 --> 24:08.000 game, as some people look at it 24:08.000 --> 24:09.000 as. 24:09.000 --> 24:10.000 It will be an actual sport. 24:10.000 --> 24:12.000 It is an actual sport but a lot 24:12.000 --> 24:13.000 of people don't view it as an 24:13.000 --> 24:15.000 >> Gaston: Alright -- First Tee 24:15.000 --> 24:16.000 of Memphis. 24:16.000 --> 24:17.000 How many more years are you 24:17.000 --> 24:18.000 involved in it? 24:18.000 --> 24:19.000 Is it up through high 24:24.000 --> 24:25.000 more year. 24:25.000 --> 24:27.000 >> Gaston: Alright, you have 30 24:27.000 --> 24:28.000 seconds to tell the young boys 24:28.000 --> 24:30.000 and girls out there why its so 24:30.000 --> 24:31.000 important to get involved at the 24:31.000 --> 24:33.000 First Tee of Memphis -- if 24:33.000 --> 24:35.000 >> Luckett: First Tee of Memphis 24:35.000 --> 24:36.000 helps you you become an 24:41.000 --> 24:43.000 overall better person and you'll 24:43.000 --> 24:44.000 learn a new game which is really 24:44.000 --> 24:46.000 >> Gaston: Malik, thank you so 24:46.000 -->
