LOOKING OUT AT THE VACUUM OF

I'VE NEVER -- I'VE SEEN HUNDREDS

OF PHOTOGRAPHS THAT WE'VE TAKENAK
FROM SPACE.
AND I'VE SEEN HOW BEAUTIFUL
THAT -- ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE

GOING OVER THE OCEAN WITH THATT
BRIGHT BRIGHT BLUE WITH ALL THE
CLOUDS AND LOOKING OUT AT THE
BLACKNESS OF SPACE.
THE THING THAT SURPRISED ME THE
MOST, AND IT'S REALLY AMAZING,
IS THAT COLOR OF BLACK.
AND EVEN IN ALL THOSE
PHOTOGRAPHS IT'S NOT THE SAME.
AND I'VE NEVER SEEN THE COLOR
BLACK OF SPACE ANYWHERE HERE ON
EARTH.
I'LL TRY TO DESCRIBE IT TO YOU
BUT IT'S HARD TO DESCRIBECAUSE I
BECAUSE I HAVEN'T SEEN IT HERE
ON EARTH SO I CAN'T TELL YOU
THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE.
AN
BUT I CAN SAY IT'S A FLAT BLACK,
NOT SHINY, IT'S FLAT, BUT IT'S
NOT LIKE A FLAT BLACK PAINT.
IT'S CLEAR AND YOU KNOW IT'S
CLEAR BECAUSE YOU CAN SEES
THROUGH IT AND YOU SEE HUNDREDS
AND HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF
PINPOINTS OF LIGHT ARE STARS.
AND THEY LOOK LIKE THEY'RE JUST
HUNG THERE ON INVISIBLE STRINGS.
AND YET -- AND EVEN THOUGH YOU
CAN SEE THROUGH IT BECAUSE YOU
KNOW YOU CAN SEE THE STARS AND
YOU CAN SEE THE DEPTH SO YOU
KNOW THOSE STARS, SOME ARE
CLOSER AND SOME ARE VERY, VERY
FAR AWAY, THAT BLAC BLACKNESS SEEMS
TO HAVE A TEX TEXTURE TO IT, SMOOTH
AND CREAMY.
SO THE BEST I CAN SAY IT'S A
CREAMY BLACK.
BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A
LIGHT CREAMY COLOR.
IT'S A VERY, VERY -- IT'S A
BLACK BLACK.
AND THAT'S THE BEST I CAN TELL
YOU.
I ALSO REALLY LOVED LOOKING DOWN
AT OUR EARTH.
AND ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING
SIGHTS I SAW, THE LAND IS
BEAUTIFUL, THE OCEAN IS
BEAUTIFUL.
I SAW THUNDERSTORMS AT NIGHT.
AND JUST ALL THESE ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS THAT WERE VERY,
VERY FAR APART FROM EACH OTHER
ACTUALLY -- I THINK THAT THEY'RE
PART OF A HUGE SYSTEM.
BECAUSE WHEN ONE FLASH OF
LIGHTNING WOULD GO OFF ALL THESE
OTHER FLASHES OF LIGHTNING AND
ALL THE OTHER THUNDERSTORMS
WOULD TRIGGER AND GO OFF AND IT
WAS LIKE THIS BIG FIREWORKS
GOING ON.
WHEN THE SUN FIRST COMES UP IN
THE MORNING AND YOU SEE THESE
BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS, IT STARTS OUT
WITH A REALLY THIN BLUE LINE AND
YOU SEE THE CURVATURE OF THEETH.
AND THEN THE LINE GETS THICKER
AND BUT YOU GET MORE AND MORE
LAYERS OF BLUE.
AND YOU CAN SEE ABOUT 20
DIFFERENT LAYERS OF COLORS OF
BLUE.
I DON'T THINK WE HAVE THAT MANY
VOCABULARY WORDS FOR THAT MANY
COLORS OF BLUE.
AND WHEN THE SUN IS FIRST COMING
UP AND IT CATCHES THE LIGHT --
LET'S LOOK AT THESE.
WHEN IT CATCHES THE LIGHT ON
THESE SOLAR RAYS?
IN THIS MODEL THESE SOLAR RACE
ARE BLUE.
BUT ON THE REAL SPACE STATION
THOSE SOLAR RAYS ARE GOLD.
AND THEY'RE NOT A SHINY GOLD,
THEY'RE A GOLD.
BUT WHEN THE SUN CATCHES THEM
AND SHINES ON THEM, THEY START
GLOWING.
AND THEY GLOW JUST LIKE THE
FILAMENTS IN YOUR TOASTER THAT
GET BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER AND
BRIGHTER.
ONLY INSTEAD OF BEING RED LIKE
YOUR TOASTER THEY TURN INTO THIS
BRILLIANT, BRIGHT, SHINY, INCA
GOLD.
IT'S JUST BEAUTIFUL.

SO ON TWO DIFFERENT DAYS YOU
HEARD THE SONG THAT WAS

SO IT WAS REALLY FUN FOR ME TO
GET TO HEAR ALL THE SONGS THAT
ALL THE FAMILIES CHOSE FOR THEIR
LOVED ONES ONBOARD THE SPACE
SHUTTLE AND INTERNATIONAL SPACE
STATION,.
AND FOR ME THE FIRST SONG THAT
WAS PLAYED WAS A ROCK AND ROLL
SONG CALLED "TEACHER TEACHER" IT
WAS PRETTY FUNNY.
WE ALL LAUGHED ABOUT THAT ONE.
THEN THE SECOND SONG THAT WAS
PLAYED WAS ONE THAT WAS REALLY
NEAR AND DEAR TO ME BECAUSE MY
SON ADAM WROTE IT, AND WROTE IT
AND SANG IT AND PLAYED ALL THE
MUSIC FOR IT, RECORDED IT.
SO IT WAS REALLY FUN TO HEAR

AND OF COURSE THERE'S AIR INSIDE
