You know I just love using different colors when I'm painting look at this place it's an artist's dream all the colors all the blends there is so much we can do here but I'll tell you a secret sometimes by eliminating the colors you can create a masterpiece and this is just what we're going to do today it's a lesson in black and white and it's on right now with Painting With Pastels [Music] thank you foreign [Music] welcome back friends to the show painting with pastels my name is Franz collage and Welcome to our studio where the magic happens now I've heard from a lot of people that says well I can draw a stick I can't draw I can't put anything together colors or anything like that we are going to allevit your fear today we are going to choose only two steaks today from our pastel box the black and the white we are going to create a painting with just these two are you ready for the challenge oh come with me this will be your adventure today I will place these here and as you've noticed I've selected my canvas again that is a small piece of canvas you are the master you are the artist you can make it as large as you want to we're going to start with the white if you'll notice that my white has some dark on it now there is a way that you can keep your pastels clean now the head for that is a box of rice believe it or not you can place your pastels in a box of rice and I would keep them clean and the other colors off of it isn't that interesting the things you pick up now I'm just applying the whites liberally on there and again remember we are only using black and white today so this should make it a lot easier for you to grasp the concept of how it works and then once you've mastered that then it will be a lot easier to come up with the other colors now once I've felt that I've applied enough of this here I'm just gonna put just a little bit here not as much as the top part because as you remember that is how we Define our horizon line from the beginning we just have one darker one lighter okay I felt I've had enough of this I'm gonna go with the black now and it's just around I'm using the side of the pastel that side there allows me to make straight lines I'll cover lots of space now this is where my line begins right here try to make a straight line as much as you can here and again what I'm doing using the side of the pastels I'm just making lines here lands across now it's amazing that from this we are going to create a painting with this a painting in pastels now some again have argued that you can't paint with pastels but again we beg to differ we are indeed painting here there we go now here I'll just make a line that's thicker than usual and I'll place my beach here this is where the sand will be actually I'll have a little Mound here there we go just like that now when you're painting again nothing has to be set you are in control you can go wherever you want to go once you make that first step the sky's the limit great okay now that I've applied both colors there I'm going to start blending the whites yeah in the center because I want that part to be pure like this I started with a small circle and then I'm moving outward into a wider and wider until I have it wide enough see makes a perfect circle so from here now I can do the textures that I want I want some clouds some dark clouds over I've always been fascinated with Black and Whites because it's just so unusual so different from reality little fact for you actually before I get married every single piece of clothing that I own it wore black and white and tell them I met my wife and she started getting me the colors the collar shirts so needless to say that this combination here is one of my favorites so we're blending again I'm blending in circles going like this because you don't want flat lines that will be for Horizons when we get this way but here for the clouds remember our mixing technique there and again this is novel of thumb you can have your own just for suggestion if you're following along want it to look like a rainy day had the Horizon there but in black and white great we almost there I've managed to keep my Center the center nice and clean here I'm gonna retouch that again because I want that to be just the way that I wanted what I'm going to do I'm gonna break that piece this piece of pastel here just to get a little piece because that's all I need here I want to use the corner of it but I want it to be small enough that I could move in so that I could make my clouds over start with the small clouds in the distance and as you're moving closer towards you you make them larger that gives you a painting uh this perspective so that you can see the distance adds an overall beautiful touch to it just like that and again the same principle goes with everything else that you're designing or drawing or painting from a distance you can start out small tiny little clouds from a distance here but as I'm moving closer they get larger and larger so if you painting you are printing on a flat surface but people can see the distance on there they can't see the perspective that's where we make the difference now again we are using just these two just to show you that there is nothing to be afraid of even if you are using just blue and black red and black red and white you can create whatever you want to with it you are not a slave of the colors anything can happen that you want to happen you are in control here there we have a background all set here we can go back later and we touch the clouds after we're done but now remember we were blaming the clouds we were making small circles we are going to do the line for the Horizon I'm going to press on it really hard and I'm gonna run it across the board one time just like this see now I'm going to do that with the second right underneath and you see the White and the black that I put together they come together harmoniously making this nice surface for me because I don't want it to be a flat surface no if you look for from where whatever vintage point in the Virgin Islands you get this picture perfect view and it's almost like a postcard lady you do see the waves over the ocean and again I'm doing just the lines with my hands like this now remember this one that we did here and I'm gonna go over it again if you don't have that that this line here that we did now this one is going to be different because I'm not going to run my finger across from it because I want that to be a wave I want it to be this wave clashing over so what I'm going to do I'm going to smooth it this way inward like this it's as if I'm making little C's inside it c c just like that it's moving okay now using that small piece of white that I cut I'm just gonna go over and I'm gonna blend some like this and some part inside the wave gonna put some of the white reflection there but the important the seafoam on top of the wave it's very important to have that not making a straight line just the same way that we did the leaves on the tree it's basically dots connected together over that now with the ladle Touch of white that I added inside I'm gonna go inside again and I'm going to do the same thing the blending but not in a straight line we're blending it so that it fits think of painting of pastels as if you are doing a sculpture you are sculpting it right on the paper so if you want something to take the shape in the blending you can work with that you can help that as well and I want that to show right here just like that now in front of this I will add some more waves so that when it's Blended comes together there we go we're still doing pushing it in so that everything sticks to the paper we want it to stay on the paper and again there is a spray fixative that you can buy so that your pastel can be preserved I'm not a big fan of it myself however because it changes the tone of the paper of the colors that I've added the colors that I've worked so hard at putting together if it changes just an inch that is too much for me so I am not such a big fan of that here we put the beach and again we can put a crashing waves right here just like that so I'm gonna blend that so that it doesn't have this flat color now if you're worried that you can't paint so you can draw again this is a good exercise for you and really if you think about it there is no such thing as not knowing how to paint if you think about it when you were little you were not born with the knowledge you did not know how to write but yet you had to learn right and what is writing really writing is in fact drawing because you are doing the lettering and these things you are not born with how to do that you learn how to do an l and a a p a c you learn all that and this is in fact drawing it's just another kind so if you think well I'm not an artist where you are in your own right and artists you can learn to be better at it which is really the goal of this show by showing you some simple techniques however don't let that stop your progress thinking well I can't do this I can't do that because you are the one who sets up the limitations for yourself you can do whatever you want you can do whatever you want to there now that I've set this up and you're wondering well you know this makes sense but what is this well we are going to put some grasses here don't worry if because normally this would be darker I just want to set this in the background that way I could go over it with the black and once we blend all that should make perfect sense and right underneath where you have the seafoam on top of the wave we're gonna add some shadow like that now I'm blending some with my pinky there is a stump that is sold at the store if you don't feel comfortable enough to blend things with your pinky if it's small enough I found out when I've been doing portraits for people for example the eyes when you have to paint the eyes and it seems delicate that you have to put your finger in there to blend that in too small in area then you can use the stump there some piece of paper that's rolled up together to give you that surface there now we're almost done we have this section here that I could add something here to add something to the painting every once in a while take a step back and look at well what can I do to make this better well this right here because I wanted to I want it to be a Caribbean painting even without the colors so again I'm gonna break a small piece of the black just like this so that I have just like that are you surprised that all that we can do we're just black and white I'm gonna blend this in just like that okay now same principle we said the background for it at the dock just as if we were using the colors except everything that we would have done in green or the other colors or the tones we're just using the black and white for it so here we're just adding the Palm fronts don't be afraid this is your thing you can do whatever you want with it if you're afraid of messing it up this is when you forget to the fun of exploring you forget to do things don't be afraid it's pastel you can go wherever you want to go with this there we go now we can blend some of this okay just like that I like what we've accomplished here so what else is missing well I can quickly touch the top of the clouds that are closer to the center there and then of course with this I will sign my name right here wasn't that fun friends we did everything with just black and white that was a challenge and I'm sure that you rise you was up to it well join us next time as we'll be back for another challenge see you next time [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] funding for this program is
