new jersey-based Bed Bath and Beyond is staring down its final days preparing to close its remaining 360 stores and more than 100 bye-bye baby locations it'll also be slashing thousands of jobs the move comes days after the company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection The Big Box retailers closing sales start today and a senior correspondent Brenda Flanagan reports customers turned out in droves to get their hold of the final goods a line of parents pushing strollers rolled in for the going out of business sale at bye bye baby while Shoppers with carts queued up at Bed Bath and Beyond looking for deals after the jersey-based big box store declared bankruptcy the chapter 11 filing filled some loyal bed bath Shoppers with Nostalgia after more than 50 years of purchasing a lot of wedding gifts wedding gifts College when you're getting ready for the dorms this is where I went and bye bye baby too because I mean I don't know where people are going to go now for baby registries you get everything here you get your appliances you know soil appliances the towels sheets everything is much cheaper than the other stores but a peak inside shows many empty shelves lots of inventory gone as the company goes through this painful and very public demise it's closing all remaining 360 Bed Bath and Beyond stores 13 in New Jersey 120 Buy Buy Baby stores plus it's Harman Cosmetics chain Nationwide the popular 20 coupons no longer accepted yeah they're not taking them okay so what if you you look at this pot I got this coupon yesterday in the mail and it's no good no what do you think I hate that all the stores are closing everything else is like on Amazon and online so when you compare it I think um it's not so great it was almost a perfect storm Rucker's economic analyst Jim Hughes says bed bath lost its focus as the retail World shifted especially during the pandemic when stores like Target quickly adapted by offering online selections that could be picked up at stores or shipped to customers lesson learned keep track of where the world is if they somehow they really missed uh online shopping they didn't realize the impact that Amazon was going to have on their Core Business Bed Bath and Beyond will conduct final sales and liquidate its inventory between now and June 30th that's when it expects all of its properties will be vacated it was a very good employer for a very long time they offered good pay good benefits and uh and it was a nice place to work Business Insider reporter Dominic reuter says the company remains open to finding a buyer but he believes bed bath rush to lay off some 1300 workers in its home state just days before a New Jersey law took effect requiring employees here receive a week of severance pay for every year worked bed bath just didn't have that kind of cash you take all of that together and it was sort of in a tailspin that was extremely difficult to escape from retail industry analysts say people are still spending on goods and that about 2 700 stores of open Nationwide so far this year compared to 1800 that have closed but customers are fickle many Shoppers want to touch the merchandise and also order online they all go hand in hand and what we've seen in retail is it's been incredibly uh successful almost 1.5 trillion dollars worth of growth in the last two years so it's been a really really strong time for retailers but you know not everyone is always going to survive the end of Bed Bath and Beyond will leave empty properties that other retailers are likely to snap up but it also leaves longtime Shoppers with a sense of loss we were just in there's not much left at least in this store it's already been pretty picked over and picked over I would say in Totowa I'm Brenda Flanagan NJ Spotlight news
