dead sealing talks in Washington are on pause Republican house negotiators saying President Biden's team is being unreasonable and here in New Jersey congressman Frank Pallone is raising the alarm saying this is all a house Republican manufactured crisis senior correspondent Joanna Gagis has the latest Bill the default act the one that they passed a couple weeks ago this is the one that says that unless you make these Cuts right 22 percent across the board then we will not lift the debt ceiling and pay our bills as Federal lawmakers hammer out an agreement to raise the national debt ceiling and avoid a default on our bills congressman Frank pallone addressed constituents who would stand to lose funding if the house plan called The Limit, save, grow act moves forward then we're talking about the negative impacts of the actual default itself God forbid that it occurred the bill ties the increase of the debt ceiling to a 22 percent cut in spending over the next decade this group in Piscataway came together in a senior center to share what the loss in federal funding would mean for their communities folks like veterans 22 veterans a day commit suicide because they're not getting the help they need they have no place to turn to those facilities to help them aside from that we have thousands and thousands of veterans that are homeless they just can't cope with Society we need more money to help our veterans not less money and Educators concerned that the spending cuts include Pre-K and early learning programs we notice a huge achievement gap between students who come to our schools from our preschool program or any preschool program it also helps parents join the workforce these decisions these dollars have a direct impact on our society today and in four years and eight years and in 20 years so I implore whoever's listening really we need more money for preschool education not less it would also include cuts to snap the federal nutrition assistance program that provides meals to low-income families and individuals the proposed cuts to the federal budget will eliminate food assistance for at least 43 000 women infants and children in New Jersey they were also threaten access to food assistance for 11 000 people age 50 to 55 here in New Jersey President Biden says he said I think he's not benefits is he right or wrong to do that he's wrong uh first of all there's no need for that because there are all these programs require you to work anyway if you're able right it's not going to put more people to work it's just going to deprive these people that can't work of um you know getting a food and nutrition seniors would see Cuts in funding for Medicare housing and food seniors are the ones who have actually paid and have worked for the as the backbone of this country to those who want to cut I say shame on you the house bill won't go anywhere and the democratic-controlled U.S Senate but as negotiations continue advocacy groups in New Jersey are calling on Washington to look for additional funding sources if we have a problem with debt we want to solve it then how about raising revenue by asking wealthy people and Wealthy corporations to pay their fair share the president and house Speaker are expected to reach a deal after Biden returns from the G7 Summit this Sunday less than two weeks before the country could on its debt in Piscataway I'm Joanna Gagis NJ Spotlight news [Music]
