WEBVTT 00:01.933 --> 00:04.033 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% JUDY WOODRUFF: As students are getting into the swing of things back at school this fall, 00:04.033 --> 00:08.700 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% high schooler Solyana Mesfin has a very unusual role, sitting on Kentucky's Board of Education. 00:11.100 --> 00:16.100 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% After going to middle school in Ethiopia, Solyana's on his family moved to Louisville, 00:17.533 --> 00:20.866 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% Kentucky, and she now works to bridge conversations between the 00:20.866 --> 00:25.500 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% state's 600,000 public school students and policymakers. 00:25.500 --> 00:30.500 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% Tonight, she shares her Brief But Spectacular take on the importance of student representation. 00:32.466 --> 00:34.766 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% SOLYANA MESFIN, Kentucky Board of Education Member: When I first came to high school 00:34.766 --> 00:38.366 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% in America, I thought it would be like what's in the movies, right? 00:38.366 --> 00:43.333 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% But once I got here, it was completely different. I didn't really know how to 00:45.733 --> 00:49.066 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% operate the system. I didn't know what it meant to be a student in America. 00:53.000 --> 00:56.733 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% I'm from Alexandria, Virginia, but I moved to Addis Ababa, 00:56.733 --> 01:01.700 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Ethiopia, when I was 11. And I moved to Louisville, Kentucky, when I was 14. 01:04.166 --> 01:06.766 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% When I first started high school, I didn't even know how to open a locker. Now I'm the first 01:06.766 --> 01:11.466 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% active student to serve on the Kentucky State Board of Education. We're one of only a few states 01:14.033 --> 01:16.666 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% that does this across the country. And it's highly important that we're able to have a seat at the 01:16.666 --> 01:21.500 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% table, but also just to be listened to and to be validated, so that we are a part of the solution. 01:23.433 --> 01:28.333 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% In my work in student advocacy, I contributed to statewide mental health roundtables and 01:30.366 --> 01:34.200 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% equity-related campaigns, especially in regards to the Black Lives Matter movement. 01:36.033 --> 01:39.300 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Being the student representative is a huge weight, because it's like almost 700,000 01:41.866 --> 01:45.000 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% students. I recognize the importance of it, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't struggle with it, 01:46.966 --> 01:51.200 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% because there's so many perspectives. And we have such a diverse array of students. 01:53.066 --> 01:57.066 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% So, I really prioritize a collaborative effort and really connecting with students 01:58.300 --> 02:01.000 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% all across the state. My sense of belonging now, 02:01.000 --> 02:05.400 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% it's something that's definitely high-end. I was an invisible student in my freshman year. But now, 02:07.333 --> 02:09.900 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% all of a sudden, teachers are saying hi, and the administration is saying hi. 02:09.900 --> 02:14.333 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% And that's the type of treatment that every student should receive. Amongst 02:14.333 --> 02:16.733 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% representation, especially student representation, 02:16.733 --> 02:21.733 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% you often have students who are glorified by their school systems, students who are 02:23.700 --> 02:26.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% the honor roll students or students who are athletes, or different things like that. 02:26.500 --> 02:31.433 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% But, for me to be in this position and for me to say -- like, I just failed a 02:31.433 --> 02:36.433 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% test yesterday -- I'm not elevated above any other student or any other person in my class. 02:38.933 --> 02:42.666 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% It's highly important for students to have this position and for students to have this voice, 02:44.066 --> 02:46.500 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% so that they can be integral parts of this education system, 02:46.500 --> 02:51.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% and we can be validated not only as learners, but as peers in this work. 02:53.566 --> 02:57.066 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% My name is Solyana Mesfin, and this is my Brief But Spectacular take on student representation. 02:58.200 --> 03:00.100 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% JUDY WOODRUFF: Thank you, Solyana. 03:00.100 --> 03:02.266 align:left position:10% line:89% size:80% What an impressive young woman. 03:02.266 --> 03:07.266 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% And you can watch more Brief But Spectacular videos online at PBS.org/NewsHour/Brief.
