- Reading with my son is always so much fun. "What does Alvin doing?" one student asked. We take turns reading aloud and then we talk about it. We try to connect the story to real life. - So he's telling everyone what to do? - Mmm hmm, that's what choreography is. This is a great teaching tool. It helps them to remember what we read and better understand the story. He can also empathize with the characters which is a great skill in reading and in everyday life. It's really cool when he was on stage, wasn't it? - [Boy] It was. - After I ask a few questions we take it a step further and write it all down. Can you think of ways that you're like Alvin? - Yeah. - Okay. Let's write down some ways that you're like Alvin. This time, he'll come up with his own ideas so he's using critical thinking skills and practicing writing. When we connect books to real life our reading time is even more engaging. - [Announcer] Sponsored by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, helping build literacy skills and encouraging parents and children to spend 20 minutes a day reading together.
