A long time Kentucky miner died in a mining accident over the weekend. West Virginia Governor Jim Justice identified the victim as 73 year old William Mapes of Freeborn Kentucky and Pike County. Mapes had 53 years of mining experience. He was working as a contractor for LSM Contracting and Mingo County, West Virginia, near the Kentucky border. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, this is the first coal mining death in the US this year. There were ten deaths last year, including four in West Virginia and two in Kentucky.
