They're just down. 02:07.728 --> 02:09.029 The numbers are down. 02:09.029 --> 02:10.864 We have talked about this for years. 02:10.864 --> 02:14.701 At some point in the future, if we don't take care of our 02:14.701 --> 02:17.304 pollinators, we're really going to have this problem. 02:17.304 --> 02:18.538 But it looks like it's here. 02:18.538 --> 02:20.741 I think it's here because, you know, 02:20.741 --> 02:22.743 people are actually calling the office like, 02:22.743 --> 02:23.844  "I don't see bees or anything." 02:23.844 --> 02:25.278  (Carol)   It's really scary. 02:25.278 --> 02:26.279  (Chris)   It is. 02:26.279 --> 02:27.981  (Carol)   I started really noticing it 02:27.981 --> 02:30.984  last year when we had the talk   on butterflies at the station. 02:30.984 --> 02:32.986  And there were just no   butterflies out there. 02:32.986 --> 02:33.987  It's scary. 02:33.987 --> 02:35.989  And now this year, I   know Jason Reeves, 02:35.989 --> 02:38.358  my colleague that works there,   just recently posted on his 02:38.358 --> 02:41.428  Facebook page that he's   excited to see the butterfly, 02:41.428 --> 02:43.730  that he is only the fifth   butterfly he'd seen this year. 02:43.730 --> 02:45.732  And he works   outside all the time. 02:45.732 --> 02:46.733  (Chris)   Wow, the fifth! 02:46.733 --> 02:47.734  (Carol)   Isn't that scary? 02:47.734 --> 02:49.136 That is scary! 02:49.136 --> 02:51.438 So how many different pollinators are there out there 02:51.438 --> 02:53.040 besides the bees? 02:53.040 --> 02:55.175 Well the bees and the butterflies get all the press. 02:55.175 --> 02:57.911 But there are a whole lot of other pollinators. 02:57.911 --> 03:01.815 You know, you sort of say, well, we keep talking about the 03:01.815 --> 03:04.117 honeybee when there's all these other pollinators. 03:04.117 --> 03:08.088 But in truth, a lot of our practices are affecting all the 03:08.088 --> 03:10.090 pollinators, not just the honeybees. 03:10.090 --> 03:12.359 So we've got to really think about that. 03:12.359 --> 03:14.694 But some very important pollinators besides honeybees. 03:14.694 --> 03:18.231 I was just reading some astounding figures on the blue 03:18.231 --> 03:21.234  orchard bee, which is also   called the mason orchard bee. 03:21.234 --> 03:25.072  Your son is named Mason so   I thought I would say that. 03:25.072 --> 03:26.406  (Chris)   That was pretty good! 03:26.406 --> 03:27.441  (Carol)   And they are actually 03:27.441 --> 03:28.408  very effective pollinators. 03:28.408 --> 03:31.144  And they're one of a group of   bees we call solitary bees. 03:31.144 --> 03:33.146  And this particular bee is   such a good pollinator that the 03:33.146 --> 03:38.251  figures I read, 2,000 of these   orchard bees can do the work of 03:38.251 --> 03:39.853  100,000 honeybees. 03:39.853 --> 03:40.854  (Chris)   Wow! 03:40.854 --> 03:43.557  (Carol)   So they tend to go to work 03:43.557 --> 03:46.326  earlier and they work later. 03:46.326 --> 03:48.695  Honeybees are   apparently kind of.. 03:48.695 --> 03:49.563  They are! 03:49.563 --> 03:51.631  And they're a little bit more   particular about the temperature 03:51.631 --> 03:54.334  and the hours that they work. 03:54.334 --> 03:56.303 Also when a problem affects a honeybee, 03:56.303 --> 03:58.805 it may carry that problem back to the hive and affect the whole 03:58.805 --> 04:02.776 hive where as a solitary bee, that bee may die but it may not 04:02.776 --> 04:04.444 affect the whole colony. 04:04.444 --> 04:06.646 So maybe we could do a little better job of protecting the 04:06.646 --> 04:08.381 solitary bees. 04:08.381 --> 04:13.086 Besides the bees, people don't like to hear the word wasp. 04:13.086 --> 04:15.222  But wasps are good pollinators. 04:15.222 --> 04:17.891  And besides, they're   good predator insects. 04:17.891 --> 04:19.226  (Genie)   Exactly! 04:19.226 --> 04:20.360  The flies! 04:20.360 --> 04:22.529  There's a lot of good   flies that are pollinators, 04:22.529 --> 04:25.866  especially the hover flies   are very important pollinators. 04:25.866 --> 04:26.600  They don't   necessarily look like flies. 04:26.600 --> 04:32.472  Some of them look like little   what I used to call sweat bees, 04:32.472 --> 04:33.840  the hover flies. 04:33.840 --> 04:36.443  Beetles are is important that it's pollinated by these 04:54.494 --> 04:55.495 pollinators. 04:55.495 --> 04:58.031 That's certainly a matter we should be concerned with. 04:58.031 --> 05:00.734 But I think it's a little short sided. 05:00.734 --> 05:05.872 I mean plants in general we need in this world to produce oxygen 05:05.872 --> 05:07.974 and the carbon sink. 05:07.974 --> 05:10.944 You know we talk about all the carbon dioxide that we produce 05:10.944 --> 05:12.679 and the way we live these days. 05:12.679 --> 05:15.115 And we depend on plants the ocean does. 05:15.115 --> 05:19.586 Even the soil will provide some carbon sink. 05:19.586 --> 05:22.622 But if we need oxygen, we need insects. 05:22.622 --> 05:23.623 Yeah, yeah. 05:23.623 --> 05:25.625 Because insects are pollinating all these other plants that we 05:25.625 --> 05:29.396 don't necessarily eat but that are basically the cleansing 05:29.396 --> 05:33.266 agent for our atmosphere and also, 05:33.266 --> 05:35.268 the other things that insects do. 05:35.268 --> 05:36.269 They break down. 05:36.269 --> 05:38.605 They're always recycling the material, 05:38.605 --> 05:40.507 helping create soil. 05:40.507 --> 05:41.775 There's just.. 05:41.775 --> 05:44.911 You could go on and on about how important insects are to our 05:44.911 --> 05:46.012 world in general. 05:46.012 --> 05:49.850 So sometimes people that go, "Well they're just being sort of 05:49.850 --> 05:51.518 "greeny, touchy-feely." 05:51.518 --> 05:53.520 Everyone talks about the almond crop, 05:53.520 --> 05:55.789 you know, in California, how that's so important with the 05:55.789 --> 05:57.791 honey bees pollinating the almonds. 05:57.791 --> 05:58.792 I could do without almonds. 05:58.792 --> 06:00.727 But we can't do without these other things. 06:00.727 --> 06:01.728  (Genie)   No, we cannot. 06:01.728 --> 06:02.729 Mhmm. 06:02.729 --> 06:06.132 So how do we go about saving these pollinators then? 06:06.132 --> 06:09.903 Do we need to cut back on insecticides, 06:09.903 --> 06:11.771 pesticides in general or what? 06:11.771 --> 06:12.772 We do, we do. 06:12.772 --> 06:15.408 We need to think about different ways that we're going to do this 06:15.408 --> 06:17.677 because you and I, maybe as a gardener, 06:17.677 --> 06:19.179 can do a little bit. 06:19.179 --> 06:20.180  (Chris)   Yeah. 06:20.180 --> 06:22.182 But I think we've got to think about it on a bigger scale. 06:22.182 --> 06:23.183 We really do. 06:23.183 --> 06:25.685 And the people get kind of upset when you bring that up. 06:25.685 --> 06:28.221 I know our economy depends on agriculture. 06:28.221 --> 06:30.223 We are from an agricultural state. 06:30.223 --> 06:33.994 And everything that we do here depends on that as a base a lot 06:33.994 --> 06:34.995 of times. 06:34.995 --> 06:36.997 So we're not trying to, you know, 06:36.997 --> 06:38.131 negate that need. 06:38.131 --> 06:40.133 We're just trying to seek that balance and say, 06:40.133 --> 06:42.168 "How can we do this more safely?" 06:42.168 --> 06:46.006 So sometimes people, you know, get upset about the G-M-Os. 06:46.006 --> 06:48.008 And I don't want to get in to that. 06:48.008 --> 06:49.676 It gets very political. 06:49.676 --> 06:52.979 But sometimes I think would that not be a better alternative than 06:52.979 --> 06:54.981 dumping insecticides on everything. 06:54.981 --> 06:58.351 I've often asked people who get upset about the G-M-Os, 06:58.351 --> 07:01.922 "If I could insert a gene that saved the American Chestnut, 07:01.922 --> 07:03.957 "would you let me do that?" 07:03.957 --> 07:06.426 So sometimes you've got to weigh the benefits. 07:06.426 --> 07:07.427  (Genie)   Balance! 07:07.427 --> 07:08.461 Yes, there's a balance there. 07:08.461 --> 07:11.331 And people that are smarter than I are going to have to help make 07:11.331 --> 07:12.332 these decisions. 07:12.332 --> 07:14.601 But I'm hoping just bringing these issues to the forefront 07:14.601 --> 07:17.871 and getting us all talking about it and not just thinking the 07:17.871 --> 07:19.873 hippies, the greenies are all about this. 07:19.873 --> 07:20.874 The tree huggers! 07:20.874 --> 07:22.208 Yeah, the tree huggers. 07:22.208 --> 07:24.210 It's important to every one of us. 07:24.210 --> 07:25.211 Right. 07:25.211 --> 07:27.213 It's an important issue, you know, --> 07:36.323 But luckily, we are in an era where they are making more 07:36.323 --> 07:39.693 targeted insecticides safer, which I think is the way to 07:39.693 --> 07:40.727 grow, to go. 07:40.727 --> 07:43.763 I be as organic as I can but occasionally, 07:43.763 --> 07:47.467 I'm going to have to kill something that's eating a valued 07:47.467 --> 07:48.468 plant. 07:48.468 --> 07:49.469  (Chris)   Agreed. 07:49.469 --> 07:51.838 And I know you're a big proponent of these very targeted 07:51.838 --> 07:52.839 and safer things. 07:52.839 --> 07:53.873 And you're right. 07:53.873 --> 07:55.875 The soap products, a lot of times, 07:55.875 --> 07:58.378 if you've just got a few plants, you don't really need to be 07:58.378 --> 08:01.047 blasting it with a broad spectrum insecticides. 08:01.047 --> 08:03.049 Alright, just pick them off if you can or, 08:03.049 --> 08:05.051 you know, just, "Hey, that plant is gone." 08:05.051 --> 08:06.052 Prune it away. 08:06.052 --> 08:08.054 Put something else there whatever the case may be. 08:08.054 --> 08:11.458 Now what about inter-plantings to attract those pollinators. 08:11.458 --> 08:13.226 Yep, that's always fun, too. 08:13.226 --> 08:15.762 To me, a vegetable garden is pretty when you've got things 08:15.762 --> 08:17.764 blooming out there and kind of mix it up. 08:17.764 --> 08:20.467 And of course that's been a big movement in the landscape 08:20.467 --> 08:23.269 industry is making your vegetable garden look pretty, 08:23.269 --> 08:24.270 attractive. 08:24.270 --> 08:26.039 We call them a kitchen garden. 08:26.039 --> 08:29.609 We even see them done in the front yard with ornaments and 08:29.609 --> 08:32.312 structures and they can be very cute and fun. 08:32.312 --> 08:36.182 Mix in those herbs in there too because a lot of those are 08:36.182 --> 08:38.284  really good, sort of,   pollinators as well. 08:38.284 --> 08:41.588  So I think all of   that is the way to go. 08:41.588 --> 08:43.957 09:53.626 there are 400,000 E-R visits. 09:53.626 --> 09:58.731 That's emergency room visits secondary to somebody goofing up 09:58.731 --> 10:00.533 in their yard or their garden. 10:00.533 --> 10:05.472 I have to tell you both my husband and I contributed to 10:05.472 --> 10:06.739 those counts. 10:06.739 --> 10:10.543 Yes, from the voice of experience, 10:10.543 --> 10:11.544 it happens. 10:11.544 --> 10:13.613 And accidents do happen. 10:13.613 --> 10:15.748 Many of them are preventable. 10:15.748 --> 10:16.749  (Chris)   Okay. 10:16.749 --> 10:19.319 And, uh, I know I want to talk about chemicals because.. 10:19.319 --> 10:23.123 But I want to also, before we get in to that, 10:23.123 --> 10:26.559 suggest everybody, um, if you're doing anything in the yard, 10:26.559 --> 10:28.628 you have children, you have pets, 10:28.628 --> 10:32.799 you're outside walking from your back door to your mailbox to get 10:32.799 --> 10:36.936 your mail, everybody needs to have a simple first aid kit at 10:36.936 --> 10:41.074  their back door or on their work   bench or someplace right outside 10:41.074 --> 10:45.211  so that should you have tripped   and fallen -- it happens over 10:45.211 --> 10:48.982  hoses, it happens just because   you're in a pair of flip-flops 10:48.982 --> 10:52.785  and slipped on the driveway --   or you accidentally cut yourself 10:52.785 --> 10:55.188 using one of your tools or whatever, 10:55.188 --> 10:57.257 having something at the back door, 10:57.257 --> 11:00.293 not that you come inside bleeding running around the 11:00.293 --> 11:02.028 house looking for a Band-Aid. 11:02.028 --> 11:03.062 So it is easy. 11:03.062 --> 11:07.901 I'm a nurse so, consequently, I have a little bit more in my bag 11:07.901 --> 11:10.637 than some of the rest of you may. 11:10.637 --> 11:13.406 But I highly recommend some plain old Band-Aids, 11:13.406 --> 11:14.440 some rubber gloves. 11:14.440 --> 11:17.877 Okay, plain old rubber gloves because if you've been out 11:17.877 --> 11:19.879 gardening, your hands are dirty. 11:19.879 --> 11:23.750 And it is much easier, instead of trying to get your hands 11:23.750 --> 11:27.887 clean, is put the rubber glove on the hand that isn't cut. 11:27.887 --> 11:32.358 Then you've got a clean hand to work with the one that's soiled. 11:32.358 --> 11:36.496 Handy wipes are wonderful but don't ever use them if you think 11:36.496 --> 11:40.300 you've got poison ivy because the handy wipe will spread the 11:40.300 --> 11:42.702 poison ivy Urushiol oil and cause problems. 11:42.702 --> 11:45.138 But just to clean up, it's wonderful. 11:45.138 --> 11:47.407 Um, Band-Aids, of course. 11:47.407 --> 11:52.078 For a bigger accident, some type of clean or sterile pad that you 11:52.078 --> 11:53.479 can put on and put pressure. 11:53.479 --> 11:56.149 If it's a hand and you need to put pressure, 11:56.149 --> 12:00.086 put the band-aid on and put the other rubber glove over it. 12:00.086 --> 12:02.622 That way you're not running blood down your arm. 12:02.622 --> 12:06.359 But it also applies a little bit of pressure and helps hold that 12:06.359 --> 12:08.361 so that you can get proper treatment. 12:08.361 --> 12:10.763 If you have to, you can even drive yourself some place to get 12:10.763 --> 12:12.098 stitches if you needed to. 12:12.098 --> 12:13.199 Okay. 12:13.199 --> 12:16.302 The other thing is frequently people get things in their eye. 12:16.302 --> 12:19.439 And it may be a little speck of dirt because you've been 12:19.439 --> 12:20.440 digging. 12:30.183 like a finger, in our eye and we start pulling our eye lashes and 12:30.183 --> 12:31.184 our eyelid. 12:31.184 --> 12:34.354 And actually, we probably are contributing more dirt from our 12:34.354 --> 12:35.355 hands. 12:35.355 --> 12:39.692 And, uh, there's also the possibility that we embed it. 12:39.692 --> 12:43.329 Years ago, one of the emergency room physicians that I worked 12:43.329 --> 12:46.032 with made a suggestion that y'all have to concentrate on 12:46.032 --> 12:47.033 this. 12:47.033 --> 12:49.035 If you get something in your eye, 12:49.035 --> 12:53.072 before you ever touch your face, close both eyes and occlude the 12:53.072 --> 12:56.809 nostril opposite the eye and sniff a couple of times. 12:56.809 --> 13:00.647 And what happens is your tears will pull or the moisture in 13:00.647 --> 13:03.950 your eye will pull across to the corner of your eye. 13:03.950 --> 13:07.654 But you've got to program your mind to do that. 13:07.654 --> 13:09.889 And of course if that doesn't work, 13:09.889 --> 13:13.326 you can have some plain old normal saline, 13:13.326 --> 13:15.528 which is just plain old eye wash, 13:15.528 --> 13:19.299 in your little bag that you put your gloves on because your 13:19.299 --> 13:21.934 hands are dirty and just put a drop or two in there. 13:21.934 --> 13:22.935 And try to flood it. 13:22.935 --> 13:24.937 But don't do all this sort of thing. 13:24.937 --> 13:25.938 Okay. 13:25.938 --> 13:26.939 Wow! 13:26.939 --> 13:28.675 And I do that! 13:28.675 --> 13:32.278 Its much easier because it washes naturally that way. have a husband who's allergic and we've had a 13:43.289 --> 13:45.325 daughter who is very allergic. 13:45.325 --> 13:48.461 If you are allergic to bee stings -- and I'm not talking 13:48.461 --> 13:49.796 about plain old poison ivy. 13:49.796 --> 13:51.097 That's something else. 13:51.097 --> 13:54.300 But nature anaphylactic type responses. 13:54.300 --> 13:55.301 There are children. 13:55.301 --> 13:58.037 We've all heard about peanut allergies and things like that. 13:58.037 --> 14:02.875 If you have a member of your family that is allergic to bee 14:02.875 --> 14:06.612 stings, wasp stings, whatever, catastrophic, 14:06.612 --> 14:09.615 you do need to keep an Epi pen available. 14:09.615 --> 14:13.419 The last two deaths of copperhead bites in the state 14:13.419 --> 14:15.855 were anaphylactic shock reactions, 14:15.855 --> 14:16.856 not from the venom. 14:16.856 --> 14:17.890 (Chris) Okay. 14:17.890 --> 14:21.494 Interesting, yes, wow, yeah! 14:21.494 --> 14:23.996 So just as some thoughts, okay. 14:23.996 --> 14:28.067 When you go outside routinely to do anything in your yard, 14:28.067 --> 14:31.404 if you are a diabetic, have high blood pressure, 14:31.404 --> 14:36.042 on blood thinner, have seizures or something along those lines, 14:36.042 --> 14:37.577 wear your medical alert. 14:37.577 --> 14:39.912 And have your neighbors know what's wrong with you. 14:39.912 --> 14:43.182 You're not betraying personal information. 14:43.182 --> 14:46.819 You just want somebody to know in case you need help. 14:46.819 --> 14:48.888 Always carry
