(soft music) - I'm Starla Sampaco in the Crosscut KCTS 9 newsroom. On Union Street in Seattle, two buildings speak to each other through proximity, history and art. On the North side is the Liberty Bank building, an affordable housing development on the side of the Pacific Northwest's first Black owned bank. The 2019 buildings facade was designed by Al Doggett who has been creating commercial and fine art in Seattle for more than 56 years. - I think Seattle is vibrant with art. It's a growing city. I see young people, older people, putting their hand into art, creating art. - [Starla] Across the street from Doggett's mural is the new Midtown Square apartment complex. It's colorful exterior was designed by Barry Johnson. - And it was like my interpretation of an explosion of color through this like tattered history of redlining. - I'm Starla Sampaco, find Black arts legacies on crosscut.com.
