A PUTTING GREEN.

HAS RUSHING WATER COMING DOWN,
SO ITS GOT A WATERFALL, AND ITS
SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE A RIVER.

IS THAT THEY WERE CALLED THE
TIBETAN WINE CUPS.

AND WHAT WERE THEY DOING
IN CHINA AT THE TIME?
Collector: WELL, POP WAS A
CAREER AIR FORCE OFFICER AND
BEFORE THE WAR AS A
CIVILIAN HE WENT TO CHINA,
FLEW FOR A CHINESE WARLORD,
CANTONESE WARLORD.
AND THEN UH, WAS FORCED OUT
BY THE JAPANESE.
THEN HE WENT BACK ON
ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE.
AND AFTER THE WAR THE AIR FORCE
PUT HIM BACK IN SHANGHAI
AS THE AIR BASE COMMANDER
IN SHANGHAI.
Dennis: AND THAT WAS STILL
AN AMERICAN AIR BASE...
Collector: OH YEAH.
VERY MUCH SO.
Dennis: THAT WE WERE USING IN
THE POST WAR PERIOD.
Collector: AND THEN WE WERE
PUSHED OUT IN UH... SOMETIME IN
'48 AS MAO ZEDONG
THEN TOOK OVER CHINA.
Dennis: AND STILL YOU
MANAGED TO GET THESE CERAMIC
PIECES OUT OF CHINA?
Collector: POP TELLS THE STORY
OF BEING ON THE BOAT LOOKING AT
THE DOCK AND LEARNING THAT HIS
BOXES AND SHIPPING CRATES WOULD
GET ON, SOME PEOPLE DIDN'T GET
THEIR STUFF BUT HE GOT HIS.
Dennis: UH, THE SAME THING
HAPPENED WITH PEOPLE TRYING TO
GET OUT OF VIETNAM IN 1975.
Collector: ABSOLUTELY.
Dennis: SOME THINGS
MADE THE BOAT,
AND OTHER THINGS DID NOT.
BUT WHAT'S INTERESTING IS THE
FAMILY FOLKLORE OF THESE BEING
TIBETAN WINE CUPS,
IS VERY, VERY REAL.
BECAUSE, THESE ARE IN FACT WINE
CUPS AND THE DESIGN THAT YOU SEE
HERE IS ACTUALLY A
TIBETAN CHARACTER.
AND IT HAS TO DO WITH LONGEVITY
AND IT HAS TO DO WITH THE
RITUALISTIC THINGS THAT WOULD
BE DONE IN A BUDDHIST CEREMONY
UNDER TIBETAN LAMAISM.
THE DESIGNS HERE ARE TRADITIONAL
CHINESE LOTUS DESIGNS,
WHICH GO BACK TO THE MING
DYNASTY, THIS PARTICULAR STYLE.
MING DYNASTY BEING THE 14TH,
15TH, 16TH CENTURY IN CHINA.
THE DESIGNS HERE AGAIN
REPLICATING THINGS THAT WERE
DONE AT THAT PARTICULAR
PERIOD OF TIME.
UNDERNEATH HERE YOU HAVE
CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY,
WHICH SAYS THAT THIS IS
FROM THE QIÁNLÓNG PERIOD,
AN EMPEROR IN CHINA WHO RULED
AT THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY.

THESE OTHER PIECES THAT YOU HAVE
AND THESE ARE A LITTLE
BIT DIFFERENT.
STYLISTICALLY THEY'RE
QUITE THE SAME.

PAINTING ON THIS IS DIFFERENT.

AT THE BOTTOM OF IT,
AGAIN CHINESE REIGN MARK ON HERE
BUT NOT THE SAME AS
THE REIGN MARK HERE.
THE REIGN MARK HERE SAYS IT'S
FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE
19TH CENTURY.

DÀOGUANG PERIOD, QIÁNLÓNG PERIOD
THIS IS ALSO DÀOGUANG,
AND THESE ARE BOTH VERY,
VERY SIMILAR TO EACH OTHER AND
THEY WOULD'VE BEEN MADE AT THE
SAME TIME, AND PROBABLY
BY THE SAME ARTIST.
SO THAT, AND THE DESIGN INSIDE,
THIS AGAIN IS SOMETHING
HERE THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING
VERY SPECIAL FOR TIBET.

A CHINESE VERSION OF IT WOULD
LOOK LIKE BACK FROM THAT
PARTICULAR TIME PERIOD.

SIX SMALLER CUPS THAT ARE
SMALLER THAN THIS.
THEY'RE PROBABLY
ABOUT THAT TALL.
SAME SHAPE.

COLORATION AND EVERYTHING ELSE?

I WOULD SAY BASED ON THE
TYPE OF PORCELAIN, DESIGN,
THE COLORATION, THE BLUES, AND
EVERYTHING ELSE THAT ARE HERE,
THE COBALT COLORS.
THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WAS
MADE NOT IN THE 18TH CENTURY,
NOT IN THE MIDDLE
OF THE 19TH CENTURY,
BUT PROBABLY IN THE LATTER
PART OF THE 19TH CENTURY.
BEFORE 1900 BUT PROBABLY
IN THE 1880'S, 1890'S.

SHANGHAI AND SHOW
HER DIFFERENT THINGS.
AND SO SHE WAS ABLE TO PICK UP
NUMEROUS PIECES OF
BLUE AND WHITE AND FURNITURE
ALSO WITH SAMMY LEE.

THAT PARTICULAR TIME
DURING THE WAR,
PEOPLE DESPERATE FOR MONEY.
Collector: YES! ABSOLUTELY.
THE INFLATION RATE
WAS ASTRONOMICAL.
AND THEY PROBABLY HAD
U.S. DOLLAR CURRENCY AVAILABLE
TO THEM AT SOME POINT SO THAT
THE PURCHASE PRICE FOR SOMETHING
LIKE THIS IN CHINESE YUAN WOULD
HAVE BEEN IN THE MILLIONS
BUT IN U.S. DOLLARS IT WOULD
HAVE BEEN IN THE HUNDREDS.

VALUE THIS GROUP OF THREE HERE,
I WOULD SAY THE PAIR HERE
