[ Cheers and applause ] -Hey, y'all. [ Cheers and applause ] [ Laughs ] My name is Brandi Carlile and I'm here to celebrate my dear friend Sheryl Crow's well-deserved induction into the wonderful Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. [ Cheers and applause ] Yeah! Now, Sheryl's not a bragger, but her achievements are staggering. She is decorated. Sheryl's got nine Grammy Awards and an unbelievable 32 nominations. [ Cheering ] She's got AMAs, ACM Awards. She's got an honorary doctorate. The American Academy of Achievement's Golden Plate Award. [ Laughter ] And then there are the Golden Globes and the Emmy nominations. The list goes on and on. And I guess she must have a pretty big mantel in her living room. [ Laughter ] But, to see it, you'd have to get past the parrot, the bearded dragon... [ Laughter ] ...I think a snake or two... [ Laughter ] ...a bunch of dogs, some barn cats, horses, and chickens, first. [ Cheering ] I [audio drop] you not. [ Laughter ] This is true. So... ...all of the accolades aside, this kind of thing is what impresses me the most about Sheryl -- she's not just your average rock star. She's a farmer, a poet, an activist, a producer, a businesswoman, a mentor, a cancer survivor, and even a doctor now, apparently. [ Laughter ] But, first and foremost, she is a spectacular mother to her beautiful sons, Wyatt and Levi. [ Cheers and applause ] She's -- [ Whistling ] Yeah. [ Laughs ] She's up at the crack of dawn, with bedhair and no makeup, driving them to school and baseball, drum and bass lessons, damn near like every other mom out there. Near like every other mom. [ Applause ] The truth is, after a few minutes in Sheryl's company, she's so charming and humble that you almost forget that she's Sheryl [audio drop] Crow. [ Laughter and applause ] [ Cheering and whistling ] But we must never forget that she's Sheryl [audio drop] Crow. [ Laughter and applause ] It can't happen. One time, me or my wife, Cath -- I can't really remember -- one of us called Sheryl a legend and she just waved it off. She didn't like that word applied to her. Doesn't like the word legend. She said something to the effect of still having work to do. And let's be clear -- she could beat me or any one of us in a footrace right now without any fair warning. [ Laughter ] But the intuitive thing about her not wanting to be broad brushed into the way that she's impacted our culture makes sense to me. Sheryl Crow and Joni Mitchell are two artists who won't accept that word because it's a monolith, and an artist doesn't dwell in the past, no matter how important it was. Sheryl isn't a stone. She's a river. -Yeah! -She's -- [ Cheers and applause ] She's an artist who's never been afraid to question herself and why she's creating, who is she creating for? Many of us, myself included, never stop to consider the one-dimensional concept of a linear career, one based on album cycles followed by campaigns, bids for awards, associated tours, and then back again -- peaks and subsequent valleys. An artist, though, won't be snapped to a grid. Sheryl does what she's compelled to do and has, in turn, woken many of her admirers, like myself, up to question the pattern, to question the design. When I stand back and look at Sheryl's mind-blowing body of work, to say that she's blazed the trail for generations of women in music would be the understatement of the century. I remember seeing Sheryl oozing effortless coolness onstage at Lilith Fair in 1997... [ Cheers and applause ] ...at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State. She had a pixie haircut, leather pants on, and she played bass like a total badass. [ Crowd cheers ] And once I forgave her for not being a lesbian, I can... [ Laughter ] ...I can still remember, just closing my eyes, laying my head back as I listened to one of the greatest voices in rock 'n' roll history echo through that sacred canyon. And I will never -- I'll never forget it. And the songs -- hit songs -- with substance, one after the other, until I run us out of time. "All I Wanna Do," "If It Makes You Happy," "Strong Enough," "Leaving Las Vegas," "Everyday is a Winding Road." And at this point, she was only two, maybe three -- two albums into her career at this point. And the deep cuts -- "I Shall Believe," "The Difficult Kind," my personal favorite, "Crash and Burn." -Whoo! -I -- Yes, that one. Right? That voice crack in "Crash and Burn" is how I got the idea to do that in "The Story." And I wished I had written every single one of those songs. And I'm not the only artist with a reverence for Sheryl's unmatched songwriting prowess. Johnny Cash, Prince, Kris Kristofferson, and Bob Dylan were impressed, too, all of whom have covered her compositions or collaborated with her, or both. Sheryl caused that healthy friction in me, that pang of stressful hopefulness that an artist will feel when someone has struck a motivating chord. She made me want to be a better musician and songwriter. I was, in my mind, a singer, but she made me want more for myself than a television vocal-show career. She also allowed me to believe and to understand that I could really do it. When it comes to empowerment, intentional or otherwise, Sheryl has always been on the right side of history. She's never afraid to speak up or take a stand. And her collaborative nature and support of other women in music has inspired me and all of her disciples on such a profound level. She took me out on tour with her when I was nobody, but she took the time to platform me as an artist in a big way by publishing a thoughtful and super-generous letter about me on her website and socials. You don't have to do that [audio drop]. She invited me out onstage with her to sing every single night, no matter how important her show was. And she was so incredibly kind to me and has supported me consistently throughout my entire career. She's the first phone call that I make when I need any advice, personal or otherwise, or mentorship, and she always answers. I mean, I literally called her outside of an emergency room a few weeks ago, because I trusted her opinion more than a medical professional. [ Laughter ] She means so much to me and my family and our entire artist community. I am truly honored to be here to induct Sheryl Crow into her joyful and rightful place... [ Cheers and applause ] ...in the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. She's one of the greatest songwriters and performers of all time. And I'm so proud to call her not just my hero, but my buddy. Please welcome on the stage Sheryl [audio drop] Crow. [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause continue ] -I want to, um... My 12-year-old will be mortified if I cry. He's like, "Mom, do you have to cry over everything?" [ Laughter ] I-I-I just want to say to Terry and to "Austin City Limits," you have no idea how important this show has been to me. I have... In fact, I was talking with Jimmie Dale Gilmore earlier. I opened up for him 30 years ago and he was saying, "Yes, I remember. I remember you played and then you started wrapping your cords and packing up your things." And I was like, "Yeah." And I got in my van with the U-Haul, and -- and I -- I'm -- I'm just grateful to still be here and to be doing it and to be inspired by people like Brandi, who, yes, opened up for me, but she's my favorite artist, and I want to be as great as her. [ Cheers and applause ] And all of my heroes have been on this show, from Willie to Ray Charles to Emmy to Townes to Guy Clark to Loretta. And it's just -- it's an important show because it features people who have written their lives and their stories in their art. They aren't up here just playing hits. They're here, like, bringing us all with them as they tell the stories of their lives. And it's made a huge difference for me. So thank you so much for this incredible honor. And I'm really touched.
